"Co-op helped me build valuable skills, grow my confidence, and opened so many doors."
What brought you to UPEI? Why did you choose to study here?
My brother suggested the idea of studying abroad, and eventually, I decided to follow in his footsteps! I’m from Yavatmal, a city in the state of Maharashtra, located in the north-central part of India. I already had some family living in PEI, so I was familiar with the place. As I started learning more about UPEI, I found it really welcoming, especially through YouTube videos and student stories. From day one, it felt like a place where I could truly grow.
I’m currently in my final year of the Bachelor of Business Administration program at UPEI, specializing in Entrepreneurship. I have just two courses left and will be graduating in Fall 2025.
How did you find out about the co-op education opportunity?
I first heard about co-op from a friend who had just completed his first work term. At first, I was hesitant because I thought it might delay my studies if not planned carefully, and I worried about whether I’d even find a placement. But looking back now, I’m so proud I went for it. Co-op helped me build valuable skills, grow my confidence, and opened so many doors. For example, when I first started at UPEI, I used to be very shy and uncomfortable with public speaking, but that changed a lot after my first co-op work term as a New Student Orientation Coordinator. In that role, I was responsible for hiring and training over 80 students, and I also had to host multiple events where I spoke on stage in front of more than 800 students. That experience pushed me out of my comfort zone and helped me grow in ways I never imagined. It gave me so much confidence that I later ran for President of the UPEI Student Union, a very public-facing role that involves regularly communicating with students, staff, and university leadership. I’m truly grateful for co-op because it helped me discover strengths I didn’t know I had and grow in areas I never thought I could.

Where did you work, and what were the main highlights of your co-op experience?
I completed all my work terms at UPEI, and I’m really thankful for the many opportunities the university provides for students. My first work term was as the New Student Orientation / Welcome Week coordinator at the International Student Office. My second work term was as a domestic student recruiter, also at the International Student Office. My final work term was with UPEI Ancillary Services as a guest services attendant. These experiences helped me grow professionally, build meaningful connections, and gain real insight into different areas of business. Even though UPEI is where I study and call my second home, it also became a place where I could learn hands-on and prepare for the workplace. I always say UPEI is a great place for international students to transition, not only does it help with cultural adjustment, but it also gives you the support and opportunities to succeed. Another highlight is my experience working as a Student Recruiter for UPEI, while also being a student myself! It was honestly one of the coolest experiences I’ve had. I got to represent UPEI and connect with recruiters and students from other universities across Atlantic Canada, which helped me make great friends and also learn more about other schools in case I ever decide to pursue my master’s outside of PEI. It was such a fun and valuable experience, it’s definitely been my favourite work term so far.
How do you feel the work experience will impact your future plans?
My co-op experiences have helped me understand my strengths and interests more clearly. During my first work term, I explored areas like management, human resources, and supply chain. After my second term, I realized human resources wasn’t the best fit for me, and I became more interested in management and operations. Now, as I near graduation, I feel much more confident in my skills and know that I want to focus on management, operations, and marketing moving forward. Co-op helped me figure that out early on, and I’m really grateful for that.

What would you say to a student considering a UPEI program with co-op education?
I would tell any student thinking about co-op: go for it! Even if the job isn’t in your dream field, it’s still a valuable experience. These work terms are meant to help you explore your interests, learn new skills, and build confidence. You’ll learn a lot about yourself and gain experience that will help you make better career choices in the future.

Co-op really helps you grow your network. After my first work term as the New Student Orientation coordinator, I had the chance to stay connected with some amazing staff from different departments. That led to another opportunity, I was invited to be a student ambassador for the 2024–2025 UPEI Annual Fund! These small opportunities can lead to bigger things and make you feel seen and appreciated. I’m really thankful I chose the co-op route. A big thank you to the Co-op Office, and especially to Karen Turner and Krissi Ewing, for always supporting us, encouraging us, and working hard to connect us with great opportunities.
