Physician Lead - Family Medicine Residency - Faculty of Medicine
$185.00 to $202.00 per hour
Salary and compensation for this position is in accordance with the approved Faculty of Medicine Remuneration Guidelines and consistent with the Health PEI Physician Services Agreement (PSA) remuneration. Final compensation will vary by specialty.

The Faculty of Medicine at the University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI) invites applications for the position of Physician Lead, Family Medicine Residency. Reporting to the Physician Lead, Postgraduate Medical Education (PGME) and working in close collaboration with the PGME Office, Health PEI, Faculty leadership, and clinical partners, the Physician Lead provides academic leadership for the development, accreditation, and future implementation of UPEI's Family Medicine Residency Program.
As UPEI establishes its postgraduate medical education programs, the Physician Lead will play a key role in designing a high-quality Family Medicine residency program that reflects the healthcare needs of PEI and meets the accreditation requirements of the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) and the Canadian Excellence in Residency Accreditation (CanERA) system. The Physician Lead will contribute to the development of curriculum, assessment frameworks, policies, governance structures, and clinical learning experiences required to support accreditation and future program implementation. Attention will be given to ensuring that the program reflects principles of social accountability, distributed medical education, community engagement, and excellence in resident training.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provide academic leadership for the development of the Family Medicine Residency Program, including curriculum, assessment, governance, and program structures.
- Support the preparation and completion of accreditation documentation required through the CanERA system and the College of Family Physicians of Canada.
- Contribute to the development of residency program policies, procedures, and governance processes consistent with national accreditation requirements.
- Lead the development of competency-based curriculum and assessment frameworks, including integration of CanMEDS-Family Medicine competencies and relevant national standards.
- Contribute to the development of Enhanced Skills residency streams, including integrated Emergency Medicine training, by supporting curriculum development, accreditation planning, governance, and future program implementation, as assigned.
- Work collaboratively with Health PEI, clinical faculty, and community partners to identify, develop, and evaluate clinical learning environments and training experiences.
- Support the recruitment, engagement, and preparation of clinical faculty, preceptors, and future residency program leadership.
- Contribute to the development of resident assessment, promotion, remediation, and program evaluation processes aligned with accreditation standards.
- Assist in planning for future resident recruitment and participation in the Canadian Resident Matching Service (CaRMS).
- Promote a culture of professionalism, respect, inclusion, wellness, and social accountability throughout program development activities.
- Engage with faculty, healthcare partners, government stakeholders, and community organizations to support the successful establishment of Family Medicine residency training on PEI.
- Support continuous quality improvement activities related to program development, accreditation readiness, and educational effectiveness.
- Undertake other duties as assigned by the Physician Lead, PGME, and the Dean, or their delegates.
Liaison & Collaboration
The Physician Lead collaborates broadly with the Faculty of Medicine, Health PEI, community physicians, healthcare partners, regulatory bodies, and professional organizations to support the development and accreditation of Family Medicine residency education.
Participates in Faculty of Medicine, PGME, accreditation, and program development committees and working groups as appropriate to the portfolio and as determined by the Physician Lead, PGME or Dean.
QUALIFICATIONS:
A medical degree with certification from the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC).
Member in good standing of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of PEI.
Membership in the Medical Society of Prince Edward Island (MSPEI).
Appointees must maintain an active appointment to the medical staff of Health PEI (HPEI).
Significant experience in Family Medicine postgraduate medical education roles and leadership.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with a track record of engaging with diverse stakeholders effectively.
Strong understanding of accreditation processes and educational standards in postgraduate medical education with a focus on the CanERA accreditation standards.
Excellent leadership, communication, and relationship-building skills.
Demonstrated commitment to advancing health equity and socially accountable medical education.
Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
