Director of Facilities Management - Department of Facilities Management
$129,736 – $143,840 per annum
Reporting to the Vice-President Administration and Finance, the Director of Facilities Management provides strategic, operational, and administrative leadership for planning, developing, and maintaining UPEI’s physical infrastructure through oversight for buildings, grounds, utilities, capital projects, space management, sustainability initiatives, and operational services including maintenance, custodial, parking, and security.
As an integral part of the Vice-President Administration and Finance’s leadership team, the Director ensures that Facilities Management supports the University’s strategic goals and academic mission, in a manner consistent with University’s values, policy, and relevant legislation/regulation.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Strategic Planning
- Provide leadership, oversight and direction for capital project planning and campus development, including recommending priorities for major construction, renovation, and alteration projects
- Lead development and monitoring of multi-year campus master plans, capital plans, space plans, sustainability and energy plans
- Support strategic decision-making aligned with University priorities
Operational Planning - Provide operational leadership of all aspects of Facilities Operations including mechanical and electrical maintenance, utilities, building maintenance, custodial services, grounds, waste management, environmental sustainability, and security
- Develop and oversee annual operational plans including budgets, capital project plans, employee performance and development plans, and risk management integration
- Implement continuous improvement initiatives and ensure policy compliance
Team Administration
- Foster a culture of trust, inclusion, collaboration, and continuous improvement
- Lead, mentor, and support departmental staff, including hiring, training, and performance management
- Oversee policy development, succession planning, and required training, including EDI initiatives
- Integrate equity, diversity, and inclusion principles into facilities operations
- Promote accessibility and inclusive design
- Conduct regular leadership check-ins, ensuring accountability, resource alignment, and effective deployment of personnel and tools
University Outcomes
- Monitor University-level performance indicators related to facilities operations, project delivery, and safety compliance
- Ensure Health, Safety & Compliance and adherence with all environmental regulations
- Develop and implement emergency preparedness and response plans and participate on the University’s Emergency Operations Centre Team
- Prepare and present reports to senior leadership and the Board of Governors
- Advise on campus closures or delayed openings due to safety concerns
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering and P.Eng designation required; Master’s degree would be considered an asset
- More than nine years of progressively responsible experience in facilities management
- Experience with construction procurement, design standards, and building systems
- Strong leadership, communication, problem‑solving, and decision‑making skills.
- Ability to work independently, manage complex operations, and build collaborative relationships
