Flag Half-Masting Notice: Remembrance Day, November 11
Flags on the UPEI campus will be lowered to half mast on November 11 to mark Remembrance Day.
Remembrance Day is a national holiday in Canada and a statutory holiday on PEI. The day is intended for "remembrance for the men and women who have served, and continue to serve our country during times of war, conflict, and peace"; particularly the First and Second World Wars, the Korean War, and all conflicts since then in which members of the Canadian Armed Forces have participated.
Each year, Canadians gather at ceremonies at cenotaphs across the country and, at 11 am, observe two minutes of silence to pay tribute to members of the Canadian Armed Forces and RCMP who served to defend our values and freedoms. We also honour those who continue to serve our country today, and the families who have lost sons and daughters, mothers and fathers, and cared for those who have returned with injuries, both visible and invisible. Their sacrifice will never be forgotten.
Veterans Affairs Canada runs a program called Canada Remembers, with the mission of helping young and new Canadians, "come to understand and appreciate what those who have served Canada in times of war, armed conflict, and peace stand for and what they have sacrificed for their country." Lest we forget.
