Girls Get WISE Challenge Day takes place at UPEI on December 6
On Saturday, December 6, a “Girls Get WISE (Women in Science and Engineering) Challenge Day” is being held at UPEI. The day will cover the topics of science, engineering, math, and technology for all female-identifying/two-spirited individuals in grades K-12.
The goal is to expose participants to hands-on science activities and careers so that they can make informed decisions about subject choices in future school years. Participants will take part in hands-on science, technology, and engineering activities led by female faculty and staff from UPEI and STEAM PEI staff. There will also be an empowerment activity to address the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women in Canada.
What they’ll explore:
Interconnected Earth-Food Webs: Discover how ecosystems work and how every
species plays a role. The Science of Seeing: Hands-on physics activities exploring perception, light, and
optical science.Coding with Cards: Build coding logic and critical thinking using fun, screen-free
programming challenges.Adaptive Engineering Studio: Design, create, test, and improve inventions using real
engineering thinking.Chemistry for a Cleaner Future: Learn how chemical reactions can help create a more sustainable world.
The event is a collaboration between Girl Guides of Canada on PEI and STEAM PEI with support from UPEI and financial support from Community Foundation of Canada's Gender Equality Fund, Actua, and the Atlantic Canada Opportunity Agency.
