UPEI marked National Day for Truth and Reconciliation with TRC Mawi’omi on October 3
UPEI held a well-attended TRC Mawi’omi in the Quadrangle between Kelley Memorial Building and the W.A. Murphy Student Centre, from 10:00 am–2:00 pm, on Friday, October 3.
The TRC Mawi’omi—the word for “gathering” in the Mi’kmaw language—was held to mark the 10th anniversary of the release of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Final Reports along with 94 Calls to Action that guide Canada’s path toward reconciliation.

As David Varis, assistant professor in the Faculty of Indigenous Knowledge, Education, Research, and Applied Studies (IKERAS), put it, “Tipi season is coming to an end.”
UPEI’s Dr. Andrew Zinck receives regional teaching and educational leadership award
Dr. Andrew Zinck, a professor in the UPEI Department of Music, was presented with the Association of Atlantic Universities’ (AAU) 2025 Distinguished Teaching Award at the AAU’s fall meeting held in Halifax, Nova Scotia, on September 23.
Name that Building! Help choose a name for our new building
The University of Prince Edward Island is excited to be approaching completion of the new 140,000 square-foot building, which supports the UPEI Faculty of Medicine and medical learners in the regional campus of Memorial University’s Faculty of Medicine, as well as UPEI students in nursing, psychology, nutrition and dietetics, kinesiology, paramedicine, and other programs.
UPEI Basketball legend Sherone Edwards earns Hall of Fame induction
The University of Prince Edward Island is proud to announce that former men’s basketball star Sherone Edwards will be inducted into the UPEI Sports Hall of Fame. One of the most dynamic players in program history, Edwards is being recognized for his outstanding career and lasting contributions to Panther basketball from 2002 to 2007.
Free Meningitis B vaccine clinics for UPEI students starting September 2
The UPEI Health and Wellness Centre is offering free meningococcal B (Men-B) vaccinations to undergraduate students at the start of the school year at various locations on the campus.
Students must provide their PEI health card or proof of international insurance, and their student ID when they get their vaccine. There is no cost to them for the vaccine.
Students can book an appointment at the UPEI Health and Wellness Centre for their vaccination by emailing healthcentre@upei.ca. They can also get their vaccine at the following:
UPEI students to collect batteries and electronic devices during Welcome Week
During UPEI Welcome Week from September 1–5, 2025, students will take part in a collaborative initiative titled “Becoming Sustainable Panthers.”
UPEI will team up with Island Waste Management Corporation (IWMC), Call2Recycle Canada, and Electronic Products Recycling Association (EPRA) to collect used batteries and small electronic devices to promote sustainability, help the environment, and provide a valuable service to the neighbouring community.

Each phase of the process has been anchored in consultation with our University and community members. In total, more than 700 participants have provided us with input, ideas, and candid feedback to help shape UPEI’s focus for the future.
UPEI celebrates 2SLGBTQIA+ community at PEI Pride Parade
UPEI students, faculty, staff, administration, alumni, and friends gathered on Saturday, July 29, to participate in the 31st annual PEI Pride Parade.
Led by members of the UPEI Student Union, the UPEI community was joined by UPEI's mascot Pride the Panther, who helped greet thousands of spectators lining the streets.
