UPEI Statement: Hate-motivated violence at the University of Waterloo

The following message was also issued to students, staff, and faculty by email on June 30, 2023.

Dear Members of the University Community,

We were shocked to learn about the horrific stabbing attack that took place at the University of Waterloo on Wednesday afternoon, June 28.

We stand in solidarity with universities across the country in condemning all gendered and racialized violence, among others, that is on the rise all around us.

UPEI Cross Country lands five recruits

UPEI’s cross-country program is pleased to welcome five new recruits to the team for the 2023–24 season: Maria Austen and Anna Harris on the women’s side, and Baley Wolfe, Max MacIsaac, and Jacob Dalton on the men’s side.

Head coach Mike Peterson is confident the new team members can help the program now and into the future. The program has taken massive strides in recent years, but Peterson says there’s still much more to accomplish. His goal is to continue the upward trajectory of the past couple of years and eventually carry a banner back to UPEI.

UPEI Hockey Panthers land former Charlottetown Islander Patrick LeBlanc

The UPEI Men’s Hockey Panthers have secured a commitment from forward Patrick LeBlanc for the 2023–24 season.

Island hockey fans should be familiar with LeBlanc’s game, as he suited up for 152 games with the Charlottetown Islanders from 2019 to 2023 when he amassed 18 goals and 35 assists. Last season, the Sainte-Marie-de-Kent, New Brunswick native played five games with the club before he was traded to the Rimouski Océanic, where he added six points (3G, 3A) in 16 games.

U SPORTS announces UPEI will host the 2024 national women’s rugby championship

The UPEI Women’s Rugby Panthers will host the 2024 U SPORTS national women’s rugby championship, representing the program's first-ever opportunity to host this esteemed event.

The announcement was one of three championships made by U SPORTS on June 28. The other two were for men’s and women’s soccer.

The women’s rugby contest is the ninth U SPORTS national championship hosted by the Panthers. The most recent U SPORTS championship hosted by UPEI was for men’s hockey, which was held earlier this year.

Message from the UPEI Alumni Association Board to the UPEI Alumni Community

Dear UPEI Alumni,

Like other members of the UPEI Community, we, the Board of Directors of the UPEI Alumni Association, were deeply disturbed and disappointed by what we read in the Rubin Thomlinson report released on June 14. We, as do you, value safe spaces in which educative experiences can flourish and are void of any behaviour that reflects harassment and discrimination—this has to be a core value embraced and practiced by all.
