IDW Brown Bag Lunch Series – "Opportunities to be a Global Village"

Join the Atlantic Council for International Cooperation (ACIC) on Thursday, February 5 at 12:00 pm in The Wave for a presenation entitled "Opportunities to be a Global Village," as a part of UPEI's International Development Week. Explore the role of international development and international development organizations within Canadian contexts and how students can become involved locally. There will be a Fair Trade Marketplace, food and presentations by the Atlantic Council for International Cooperation (ACIC) PEI member organizations. Presenting organizations include: Campbell Webster Foundation, Cooper Institute, CUSO International, CUPE, Canadian Women for Women in Afghanistan, Farmers Helping Farmers, Mikinduri Children of Hope, and WUSC. Light refreshments will be provided, and a door prize will be given out to one lucky attendee!

IDW Brown Bag Lunch Series – “Restoring Family Links”

Join the Canadian Red Cross on Friday, February 6 at 11:30 am in the Faculty Lounge of SDU Main Building for a presentation entitled “Restoring Family Links,” as a part of UPEI's International Development Week. The chaos and confusion that accompany war and natural disasters can separate families when they need each other most. The Canadian Red Cross Restoring Family Links program helps people in Canada re-establish contact with immediate family members after separation due to armed conflict, natural disaster, migration and other humanitarian crises. Light refreshments will be provided.

Games and Karaoke Night

Join the Society for International Students and the UPEI Iranian Society for a Games and Karaoke Night, on Wednesday February 4 from 6:30-8:30 pm, in the Campus Life Lounge in the W.A. Murphy Student Centre (second floor above Bookstore), as a part of UPEI's International Development Week. Play board games and sing karaoke, all while meeting and making friends from all around the world! Enjoy an evening of free music, games, and snacks. This event will be combined with the International Coffee House , rescheduled from Tuesday, February 3.

Desserts and a Difference

* Due to weather conditions and the closure of the University, this event has been postponed until further notice. Join us for an afternoon of “Desserts and a Difference”, on Thursday, February 6 from 2:30-4:00 pm featuring a keynote address from Dr. Timothy Goddard, entitled “The quest for Buen Vivir: For whom are we making a difference, and why?” Drawing on contemporary development theory and examples from some of the international initiatives in which he has been involved, Dr. Goddard will challenge some of our taken-for-granted notions regarding the nature of development. He will reflect on the idea of international development and examine some of the ways in which local communities can assume agency for their own future. Presentation to be followed by a dessert reception, featuring instrumental music from UPEI International student, Jacob Liu, and door prize draw! Reserve your tickets today by visiting upei.ca/idw. Challenge your friends to an evening of globally focused and internationally-themed trivia at The Wave on Thursday, February 5 beginning at 9:00 pm. Staff, faculty, and students will answer questions in teams, with prizes to be awarded to the top teams. Everyone welcome!

Free Movie Showing of Ryan’s Well

The UPEI Charity Club invites the campus community to the showing of Ryan’s Well, on Wednesday, February 4 from 2:00-3:30 pm in room 104, K.C. Iriving Chemistry Centre, as part of UPEI's International Development Week. Ryan's Well is an inspirational story about a boy who was determined to make a difference in the lives of the people living Angolo, Uganda. Through Ryan Hreljac’s fundraising efforts, thousands of dollars was raised to build a well for the village. This documentary follows Ryan’s story from his first conversations with his Ugandan pen pal to the day he visited Angolo and saw the well for the first time.

Environmental Sciences and Human Biology research seminar

Montelpare. “Evaluating the efficacy of blueberries in the fight against fat,” presented by Dan Gillespie, MSc (HUB), supervised by M. Sweeney-Nixon and K. Gottschall-Pass. Dr. Frances Gray Music Performance Competition 2015 Finals

The Dr. Frances Gray Music Performance Competition 2015 Finals concert will be held Thursday, January 22 at the Dr. Steel Recital Hall, UPEI at 7:30 pm. This annual competition was recently renamed in honour of Dr. Gray’s retirement from the UPEI Music Department. The six students chosen from the preliminary round to perform in the finals are: Rebecca Apps, soprano; Jillian Clow, mezzo soprano; Leah Inman, piano; Lucas MacPhail, alto saxophone; Kailey Norris, clarinet and Hannah Rollwage, mezzo soprano. Judges for the competition are well-known PEI musicians and educators: Reg Ballagh, Peter Bevan Baker, Ken Fornetran, Karen Graves and Anne White.
