President Keefe issued a message to faculty and staff about the passing UPEI employee Art Mitchell on Sunday, February 20, extending condolences to his wife, family, friends, and colleagues on behalf of the University.
Art was a service worker with the Department of Facilities Management. He began his employment at UPEI in 2009 as a casual service worker and became a permanent employee in 2010. Art worked on the evening shift in various buildings across campus over the past 12 years, and most recently had worked in Kelley Memorial Building. He was known to go the "extra mile" and will be greatly missed by all those at UPEI who knew him.

The UPEI Health, Safety and Environment Department (HSE) is offering Emergency and Standard First Aid/CPR training sessions in April, specific dates TBD.
This basic one-day course offers lifesaving first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) skills.
Cost of registration will be covered by HSE for all UPEI faculty and staff. Priority will be given to those who were originally scheduled to attend the December 17th session and First Aiders in each campus building who need to renew their certification. Please note that lunch will not be provided.

On June 1, 2021, eye protection became mandatory in all UPEI laboratories. This includes Containment Level One and Containment Level Two laboratories that manipulate biohazardous materials, and laboratories in chemistry, physics, and engineering that handle materials other than biohazardous substances that could pose an ocular risk. At a minimum, safety glasses that meet the standards and specifications of CSA Standard Z94.3-20 are required. However, if a task presents a higher risk, then the laboratory supervisor is responsible for completing a workplace hazard risk assessment to identify appropriate eye and face protection, as necessary. Please visit Section 4.5 Eye and Face Protection in the UPEI Laboratory Safety Manual on the UPEI website for more information. The definition of "laboratory" is provided on page 3 of the manual.

“Freedom to Read Week is an annual event that encourages Canadians to think about and reaffirm their commitment to intellectual freedom, which is guaranteed them under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms” (freedomtoread.ca). That includes having access to all reading materials.
Books, magazines, newspapers, and other materials are challenged in Canada and around the world all the time. The Harry Potter Series by J.K. Rowling and The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood are among those that have been challenged in Canada.
We encourage you to come to the Robertson Library and check out our selection of books that have been challenged in Canada in our Freedom to Read Week display. A description of where, when, and why the book was challenged is attached to each book.
Pick up a sheet (or a few) of the Freedom To Read word search puzzles and challenge yourself to find all the listed words in the puzzle.
And, don’t forget to share your favourite banned or challenged book.
