Another week, another article posted to get us all thinking together about issues of equity and inclusion. "How to make your social justice events accessible to the disability community" addresses the often invisible ways in which assumptions about ability permeate our everyday activities and practices, and provides a long list of ideas to move us to reconsider some of those assumptions. Head on over to http://projects.upei.ca/arts-equity-and-inclusion/ and click on the 'discussions' button. And share with your colleagues too.

Every UPEI Alumni who registers will receive one FREE Island Storm Basketball game ticket for the last home game of the season March 30th - 7pm when the Storm take on the Cape Breton Highlanders! Get spotted in the crowd wearing UPEI gear and you could be rewarded with a fantastic prize!

Register for your FREE ticket by contacting Kathy Weatherbie at krweatherbie@upei.ca or at 902-566-0687 before noon on March 25.

Enjoy the game!

This year Vagabond Productions takes its audience back to the Renaissance, but not for a visit with the familiar playwright you might expect. It isn't very often directors and theatre troupes venture into the realm of the Renaissance without Shakespeare being involved in some respect. This year, however, Greg Doran and the cast and crew are presenting a show that has no known author.

Don't mistake that for meaning there won't be familiarity. The classic Renaissance comedic stylings and flowing iambic pentameter are still very much present and accounted for. Vagabond are looking to take this show and run with it in an over the top fashion so that uproarious laughter will be an unavoidable pleasantry, as the troupe returns to the UPEI faculty lounge in 2019. If you like The Princess Bride, then you'll love A Most Pleasant Comedy of Mucedorus.

The production runs from March 12th to 16th and seating is limited with no pre-sale tickets available. So, if you'd like to catch a classic, family-friendly Renaissance style show that you've never seen before, make sure to head over to The Faculty Lounge in The Main Building at UPEI. The doors open at 7:00 pm, for a 7:30 pm start. Admission is "pay-what-you-can." For more information, contact UPEI Vagabond Productions on Facebook, at gdoran@upei.ca, or call 902-566-6013.

History of Agriculture on PEI
The Environmental Studies Book Club Discussion Series

This winter we will be reading and discussing "Time and a Place: An Environmental History of Prince Edward Island" (2016). Our discussions will probe into past and present environmental changes on PEI, and how and why the Islanders are particularly sensitive to environmental issues and enmeshed in their landscape in a way that is unique among Canadians.

During our third discussion we will talk about the history of agriculture on PEI and will focus on the chapters “The Fertile Crescent: Agricultural Land Use on Prince Edward Island, 1861-1971” by Dr. Joshua MacFadyen and “Agriculture and the Environment on Prince Edward Island, 1969-2014: An Uneasy Relationship” by Mr. Jean-Paul Arsenault.

We are thrilled that the authors, Dr. Joshua MacFadyen and Mr. Jean-Paul Arsenault, will join our discussion.

Selected first-year students are invited via their UPEI email to participate in the CUSC-CCREU 2019 Survey of First Year Students, along with students from more than 60 other Canadian institutions. Core areas covered by the survey include

First-year students are asked to check their UPEI email to see if they have received an invitation to participate in the survey. If so, they are asked to complete it as soon as possible. The survey will close in mid-April. Responses are confidential, and participation is voluntary. To learn more about the survey, visit http://cusc-ccreu.ca.

BlackBoard Collaborate is web conferencing software that allows instructors to do many things to engage with their students. Meet with your students online instead of face-to-face. Use it to record your teaching for days when your class has been cancelled so that your students don't miss out or fall behind. You can't stop snow days but your students' learning doesn't have to stop either. Come learn more about how easy it is to use this software in a workshop on Tuesday, March 12th from 10:30 to 11:30 am in Room 265 of the Robertson Library. REGISTER

A hackathon takes a creative and collaborative problem solving approach to addressing a real issue. In May-June, 2019, the Province of Prince Edward Island will be hosting the second annual public service hackathon, a 6-week case competition designed as a professional development opportunity that brings together multi-disciplinary teams of federal, provincial, municipal and private sector professionals working in PEI. In recognition of the value of experiential learning, the planning committee is offering one space on each of the ten teams to a UPEI student as an unpaid internship opportunity. The hackathon/internship carries 3-semester credit hours. Students must apply by March 31, 2019 by registering in ARTS 1050-1. For more information email policyhack@upei.ca.

March 8th is International Women's Day - a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women.

In celebration of International Women’s Day, WUSC UPEI Local Committee, the Rotaract Club of UPEI, and Robertson Library will be showing the documentary To Educate A Girl: Empowering Women and Girls in the Developing World, by filmmakers Frederick Rendina and Oren Rudavsky.

“What does it take to educate a girl? Framed by the United Nations global initiative to provide equal access to education for girls by 2015, TO EDUCATE A GIRL takes a ground-up and visually stunning view of that effort through the eyes of girls out of school, starting school or fighting against the odds to stay in school.” Kanopy

The purpose of the film will be to raise money for the Shine A Light Program, an initiative that provides women and girls within refugee camps the opportunity to better their educational prospects.

Admission is free, but there will be donations accepted at the door. Any amount can make a difference in someone's life.

Friday, March 8th
