Dr. Kathleen MacMillan, AVC Equine Ambulatory Service, will give a community workshop on Wednesday, July 11, about strangles, a highly contagious bacterial infection that affects the upper respiratory system of the horse. The presentation will take place in AVC’s Lecture Theatre A at 7:00 pm.

She will talk about the symptoms of strangles, diagnosis and treatment, and ways to reduce the risk of infection. Last month, several cases of strangles were diagnosed in horses in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and PEI. The bacteria causing the illness is easily transmitted by nose-to-nose contact between horses or from things that come in contact with nasal discharge from a sick horse, such as clothing, hands, or equipment.

Ethics protocols that involve ‘more than minimal risk’ must be reviewed by the full UPEI Research Ethics Board (REB). 

Please note: The REB does not meet during July or August so protocols involving ‘more than minimal risk’ that are submitted in July and August will be held until September for review at the September 2018 meeting. 

Other ethics protocol submissions, including new applications that do not involve ‘more than minimal risk’, renewals, and amendments may be submitted at any time. They will be sent for delegated review as soon as all necessary forms are received.

This study reviews existing research conducted between 2007 and 2017, regarding integrating technology in K-12 classrooms and preparing K-12 teachers for using technology in their classrooms. The present study examines studies concerning the integration of technology in K-12 classrooms and investigates professional development models for encouraging pre-service and in-service teachers to use technology.

This study synthesizes quantitative, qualitative and mixed methods studies in order to have a comprehensive view of existing research. Based on a review of 45 articles concerning integrating technology in K-12 classrooms, and 50 articles focusing on K-12 teachers' professional development regarding technology, this review found that there were relatively few empirical studies conducted in actual K-12 classrooms and relatively few studies of embedded professional development. This study seeks to contribute to current research focused on integrating technology in K-12 classrooms and on K-12 teachers' professional development about teaching with technology. It recommends more empirical research in K-12 classrooms and more research on K-12 teachers' embedded professional learning about technology.

Her Excellency the Right Honourable Julie Payette, Governor General of Canada, will undertake an official visit to Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia from June 25 to 27, 2018. She will make stops in Charlottetown, Halifax, and Lunenburg.

As part of her stop in Charlottetown on Monday, June 25, Her Excellency will visit the UPEI campus briefly to meet with representatives from the Faculty of Sustainable Design Engineering and the UPEI Climate Lab. This portion of her visit is not open to the public.

However, members of the public are invited to Government House (1 Terry Fox Drive, Charlottetown) no later than 11 am on Monday, June 25 where Her Excellency will receive military honours, including a 100-person guard of honour and a 21-gun salute.

Strategic Construction Ltd has been awarded the contract for the Memorial Hall Level 2 Renovations Project. Construction is expected to begin as early as Monday, June 25, 2018 and is expected to be complete by the end of August 2018. During this time there will be noise and possibly some vibrations. This area will be considered a construction zone. The project will focus on a portion of level 2 to be renovated to create a suite of office and support space, including, electrical, mechanical and architectural systems upgrades.

While the contractors have been instructed that the work be executed with the least possible interference or disturbance to the campus community, a certain amount of disruption is inevitable. Your patience and understanding is appreciated as we proceed with this renovation project that will enhance the facility.
