Looking for an enriching volunteer experience this summer? The UPEI English Language Centre is looking for volunteers to join us in assisting with afternoon socio-cultural activities and acting as conversation partners in hosting this year’s English language Camps for International students! This is a fantastic opportunity to learn and strengthen valuable skills, experience other cultures, and of course have a blast doing it! Activities may include things such as trips to Anne of Green Gables, scavenger hunts, tours, on-campus workshops, beach visits, and more! There will be a UPEI Biosafety Training Session for Summer Students on Tuesday, May 15, 2018 from 9:00 am to 12:30 pm in AVC Room 287N.
This session is aimed at all students working in and around containment labs for the summer. Topics to be covered include biosafety and biosecurity principles and what is required to work in biohazard containment labs.
This is a new training program, and is required for all summer students working in CL2 labs, even if the student attended the summer training session provided last year.
To attend, you must pre-register by contacting Kathryn Harrison, Health, Safety, and Environment before May 10, 2018 by email at kharrison@upei.ca or by phone: 902-566-0901. Provide your name, email address, Department, and the name of your supervisor for the summer. If you have any questions on this training session, please contact Kathryn.

They will be reviewed at the May meeting. Protocols involving ‘more than minimal risk’ that are received after May 6 will be reviewed at the June 2018 meeting.
Other ethics protocol submissions, including new applications that do not involve ‘more than minimal risk’, renewals, and amendments may be submitted at any time. They will be sent for delegated review as soon as all necessary forms are received.
Please ensure that you download and use the current forms. Use Adobe Reader to complete forms.

GSA once stood for Gay-Straight Alliances, but the terminology is evolving along with the understanding and experiences of gender and sexuality. Be part of the conversation at shOUT! PEI’s 5th annual Gender & Sexuality Awareness Conference! The day-long event will feature hands on workshops, engaging presentations, and thought provoking discussion panels around LGBTQ2S+ issues faced by Islanders. The keynote performance is by Island artist, Tanya Davis.
We're stoked to be able to feature workshops on drag make-up and zine-making, among others. Our various presentations will cover issues such as LGBTQ2S+ mental health, how to start your very own GSA, a radical safer sex talk ,and more! Queer focused discussion panels will run throughout the day for a chance to share your thoughts, opinions, and feelings.
And don't forget to check out QueerScape to see the plethora of talent possessed by queer Island artists! We are still accepting art in any medium from queer island artists. If you're interested, let's talk about it! Please send us a brief statement about your work and we'll (try our darnedest to) make it happen.

Bring non-perishable food or grocery items (e.g. canned goods, pasta, light bulbs, toilet paper, etc.- please no damaged, expired, or opened goods) for the Campus Food Bank to the Service Desk at the Library from Friday, April 6th to Friday, April 27th, 2018 and we’ll deduct $2.00 per item from your library fines.

The Faculty of Science wishes to announce Sarah Wangeci Muthee, Masters student, will be defending her thesis entitled "Effects of a Combined Horticulture and Peer-led Nutrition Education Intervention on Food Security, Diet Diversity and Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practices of Women Farmers Belonging to Women’s Self-help Groups in Rural Eastern Kenya."
The defence will take place on April 18, 2018 from 8:30 am to noon in the Health Sciences Building, 323.

If you have difficulty carving out uninterrupted time for writing, if you struggle with motivating yourself to write, or if you would simply like the supportive collaboration of a writing retreat, consider Time to Write, UPEI's faculty writers retreat.
When: Wednesday, May 16 to Sunday, May 20
Where: Stanley Bridge Country Resort
Cost to participants: $200, which includes four nights accommodation, meals and snacks
Your project must be at a stage where sustained writing time makes sense. Your research and/or data collection and analysis must be completed to the point that you are ready to write. You must also be prepared to commit to the full program: a total of 3½ days focused on writing.
The retreat is open to tenured and tenure stream University of Prince Edward Island faculty in any Department/Faculty/School.
Email Research Communications Officer Dave Atkinson, datkinson@upei.ca, with a brief summary of the project you plan to work and your writing goals for the retreat. There is room for six participants at Time to Write.
The April 2018 Island Studies Lecture takes place on Tuesday, April 17, at 7 p.m. in the SDU Main Building Faculty Lounge on the UPEI campus and will feature author Katherine Dewar speaking about “The Making of a Canadian Military Nursing Heroine.” The heroine in question is Prince Edward Island’s own Georgina Fane Pope (1862-1938) and is the subject of Katherine’s soon-to-be-released book from Island Studies Press: Called to Serve.
Admission to the lecture is free and everyone is welcome to attend.

The University of Prince Edward Island's School of Sustainable Design Engineering (SSDE) annual Student Design Expo on April 20 will showcase the best in student, sustainable, and green engineering in Atlantic Canada.
Student projects will be set up for public viewing at various stations around the first floor of the SSDE Building. Each project is the result of collaboration between UPEI SSDE students and an industry or community partner. Students were tasked with designing and creating solutions to their partners’ unique challenges.
The Student Design Expo begins with a short ceremony at 1:00 pm. Projects are available for viewing through the afternoon, with the Student Award Ceremony beginning at 4:00 pm, and a brief panel discussion about opportunities for design engineering graduates beginning at 4:30 pm.
In consideration of the difficulties that exposure to scented products cause to sensitive individuals UPEI asks for your cooperation in making our campus a scent-free environment. We ask that all faculty, staff, students, and visitors refrain from wearing or using products with strong scents/fragrances while on campus. A few examples of products to refrain from wearing or using are: colognes/perfumes, body sprays, lotions, hair care products, hand/body soaps and lotions, shaving cream, sun screen, laundry soap, fabric softeners, air fresheners, scented candles and Aromatic Oils (used in aromatherapy).

• Use the most current Adobe Reader to complete forms and only current forms will be accepted.
Both the signed hard copy and electronic protocol submission must be submitted by the deadline date.

Those protocols received after the deadline will be reviewed the following month. The Committee requires at least one month for processing applications.
