As part of the Chaplaincy Centre Renovations, WM&M have been contracted to remove the Gazebo. Due to the age and condition of the structure it will not be re-located elsewhere on Campus. The removal of the Gazebo is necessary for Island Coastal Services to begin the construction of a new outdoor social/meeting space that will begin Monday, June 5th.
While the contractors have been instructed that the work be executed with the least possible interference or disturbance to the campus community, a certain amount of disruption is inevitable. Your patience and understanding is appreciated as we proceed with this renovation project that will enhance the facility.

Time and location: July 3 – 28, 2017, University of Prince Edward Island
School Directors: Dr. Alexander Alvarez, Dr. Gordon MacDonald, and Dr. Nasser Saad.
The summer school is intended for graduate students and promising undergraduate students from all parts of the world. Each participant is expected to register for at least two of the three courses. Each course consists of three hours lecture sessions per day for two weeks. These are graduate courses approved by University of Prince Edward Island and we will facilitate transfer credit to the extent possible.

The Healthy Campus Committee is coordinating a FUN Challenge for UPEI Employees and Students over the summer. The challenge involves a number of ways to boost your wellness! This will be a 3 hour training session with handouts, based on CCAC Recommended Syllabus (exam included). The Canadian Council on Animal Care (CCAC) requires that all personnel involved with the use of animals in research, teaching, testing and service take this course. (A refresher course is required every 5 years).

There will be a UPEI biosafety refresher training session Thursday, June 29, 2017 1:00 – 3:00 pm in room 237, Kelley Memorial Building.
This session is required for those who attended the Basic Biosafety course in 2013 or earlier. It is not a substitute for Basic Biosafety. Topics to be covered include a review of basic biosafety principles, a practical approach to spill cleanup, and an update on what’s new at UPEI in the field of biosafety.

Topics to be covered include basic biosafety principles and how they are applied at the University of Prince Edward Island, as well as biosecurity training. This session is open to graduate students.

The most notable changes from the previous Health and Safety policy are:
1. Title Change: The current title includes the term “Environment”, to ensure everyone that works, studies or visits UPEI understands our commitment and expectation for environmental stewardship: our responsible use and protection of the environment.
2. The length was reduced from 9 pages down to 3 pages by removing procedural and compliance expectations that are covered in other health and safety documentation.
3. Includes definitions of specific terms that assist with understanding the policy.
4. Clarifies responsibilities of all UPEI workplace stakeholders.

Seniors College is a non-profit organization affiliated with the University of Prince Edward Island. It offers non-credit courses for seniors so they can continue the joy of learning without the usual pressure of exams or papers.
Seniors College is hoping to re-offer the very successful ‘Sharing Our Research’ program in which UPEI researchers share their area of expertise with participants. It is seeking UPEI professors & researchers who are willing and able to give one Friday morning session during the months of January and February 2018. Each class would be one to one and a half hours long, with a presentation, time for questions and discussion.

David Lepofsky is a visiting professor at the Osgoode Hall Law School and an adjunct member of the University of Toronto Faculty of Law. He holds volunteer leadership roles in the disability community.
In his plenary at the Second Pan-Canadian Conference on Universal Design for Learning at UPEI, he will focus on how to effectively advocate for the adoption and implementation of UDL. David Lepofsky led the decade-long campaign to win the 2005 enactment of the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, and now leads the campaign for its effective implementation and enforcement. As chair of the TDSB SEAC, he is leading a top-to-bottom review of the delivery of special education in Canada’s largest school board. Following his plenary, David will lead a workshop to continue conversation with conference participants. In this workshop, David will conduct an interactive discussion with attendees on how to get UDL effectively embedded at your school board, college, university or by your government.

In order to allow ITSS sufficient time to install new and upgraded software in student computer labs so that students have the software resources needed for the fall semester (September 2017), we must receive requests including any installation media (CDs, DVDs, etc.) and any related licensing information such as serial numbers before June 1, 2017. (NOTE: Software should be Windows 7 compatible and is required to be licensed as network installations, not for single workstations only.)

On Thursday, June 1st, Mr. Naidoo will present at UPEI in Irving Chemistry Centre, Room 104, from 1:30pm to 3:30pm. Naidoo's discussion explores why people are poor when we walk on gold, diamonds, and resources that fuel the global economy; the extent to which the technological revolution has changed the way we live, organize ourselves, and work; and what the future may hold for education, training and jobs.

The thirteenth annual PEI Nursing Research to Practice Conference is being held May 26 in Don and Marion McDougall Hall at the University of Prince Edward Island. The conference brings together practicing nurses, academic researchers, and students to hear and share the latest research from their respective fields of practice. This year’s conference explores how nurses can work towards improving the patient and family experience.
Conference Keynote
Dr. Tara Sampalli is Director of Research and Innovation, Primary Health Care and Chronic Disease Management, at the Nova Scotia Health Authority and an assistant professor of Medical Informatics at Dalhousie University. Dr. Sampalli effectively blends research with practice, bringing the novel concept of “embedded research” into healthcare. Her research interests include care models for chronic disease management, patient centered care and multi-morbidities, integrated models of care, knowledge management, and application of innovative IT solutions in healthcare.

The School of Sustainable Design Engineering at UPEI is launching its first ProGRES Summer Program to promote engineering research interest and involvement among young women in high school. Through the ProGRES Program, high-school students will have the opportunity to participate in cutting-edge research projects with world-class researchers in state-of-the-art facilities. The selected students will work directly with a female faculty researcher and mentor on an independent research project, and they will have opportunities to meet and work with female engineers and engineering students.
