Are You Prepared for an Emergency? – presented by Cindy MacDougall, Emergency Management Coordinator, UPEI; Monday, October 23, 12:05–12:55 pm, KMB 211
If an emergency happens, it may take emergency workers some time to reach you. Could you look after yourself and your family for three days if no services were available and emergency responders couldn’t get to you? Emergencies may be beyond our control, but we can reduce the risk and the impact. There are three simple steps to become better prepared: know the risks; make a plan; get an emergency kit.

Do you have questions about your role as a warden or the evacuation procedures for your building? Please join us for a very special presentation by a distinguished visitor from the University of Malta, Dr. Josef Trapani. Dr. Trapani holds Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from the University of Malta and a PhD from the University of Brighton. He is Lecturer in the University of Malta’s Faculty of Health Sciences and is the International Coordinator for that university’s Department of Nursing. His main academic interests include critical care nursing, clinical decision making, evidence-based practice, e-learning, health promotion, qualitative research methodologies, and Maltese linguistics.

Today, Thursday, October 19, Dr. Trapani will speak about “Referring inCritical Care: Nurses as Dual Agents”. Research indicates that one of the most frequent nursing decisions is that of seeking help from medical, nursing, or other health care practitioners; yet, there is very limited research around the factors related to, and the actual process of, such referring. Dr. Trapani’s study sought to address this research gap by exploring the factors associated with critical care nurses’ decisions to seek help from doctors, and to explain the process of referral in the context of an intensive care unit by means of a substantive theory derived from the data.

The presentation will take place from 2:00-3:00 pm in the SDU Main Building Faculty Lounge. All are welcome!

How is my course going and how am I doing? With the semester half over, these are great questions to ask your students since there's still time to make minor changes that could have a major impact on overall student learning outcomes. The E-Learning Office is hosting a student feedback survey creation workshop on Tuesday, October 17 from 1:00 to 2:00 pm in the LINC (Room 265) at the Robertson Library. This workshop is for any interested faculty or instructional staff. In this workshop you will learn what kinds of questions to ask to help you get the feedback you need from your students. You will also learn how to create a quick online survey for your questions that will make data collection and analysis easy.

To register for this workshop, or if you cannot attend but would like to learn more, please email Joel at joelmacdonald@upei.ca.  Space is limited!
