Cancer cells make sounds: who is listening?
Dr. Bill Whelan
Detecting cancer at its earliest stage is a significant challenge. A new approach to cancer imaging involves a great deal of listening. When you shine pulsed laser light on cancer cells, they can emit a symphony of sounds. The pitch or frequency of the sound created depends on the size and shape of the cell and the sound volume depends on its color. By listening to and studying the sounds, one can differentiate between normal and cancerous tissues. This is a breakthrough in medical imaging that is positioned to improve cancer management.

Embedded Systems Design: Smart Everything
Professor Christopher Vessey
Small programmable prototyping devices have become inexpensive and readily available to people; no longer do we require expensively-equipped laboratories to produce real-world designs. With these systems, people are free to express creative ideas in ways they never thought possible. Today's explosion of automated systems development is a direct result of these abilities, and the move towards the "Internet of Things" where common objects become Internet accessible in an interactive way is a major new direction of development.

Creativity in the Engineering Design Process
Professor Elizabeth Osgood
A presentation on the role of the mentor, how to encourage creativity, as well as having participants to do a quick hands-on design so they can experience what we're talking about. Discussion will include some of the more creative engineering projects (walking on water, Rube Goldberg, and this year's project to get an athletic ball through obstacles in a life size maze on the beach without touching the ball).
Time to Write faculty writers retreat, November 11-15
If you have difficulty carving out uninterrupted time for writing, if you struggle with motivating yourself to write, or if you would simply like the supportive collaboration of a writing retreat, consider Time to Write, UPEI's faculty writers retreat.
 
When: Wednesday, November 11 to Sunday, November 15
 
Where: TBD
 
Cost to participants: $200, which includes four nights accommodation, meals, and snacks
 
Your project must be at a stage where sustained writing timemakes sense. Your research and/or data collection and analysis must be completed to the point that you are ready to write. You must also be prepared to commit to the full program: a total of 3½ days focused on writing.
 
The retreat is open to tenured and tenure stream University of Prince Edward Island faculty in any Department/Faculty/School. Email datkinson@upei.ca with a brief summary of the project you plan to work and your writing goals for the retreat. There is room for six participants at Time to Write.

Indian School Road reading
Chris Benjamin is a well-known fiction and features writer. His latest book,Indian School Road: Legacies of the Shubenacadie Indian Residential School, won the 2013 Dave Greber Freelance Book Award.
 
On Friday, September 18, Chris Benjamin will be sharing his new book on campus at UPEI during a brown bag lunch to be held in the Main Faculty Lounge from 12:00 - 1:00. Everyone is welcome to attend.
 
The event takes place soon after the publication of the Summary Report of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.  In an interview with the CBC’s Peter Mansbridge on June 1, Justice Murray Sinclair stated, “Education is the key to reconciliation.”  t is in this spirit that the UPEI community and members of the public are gathering together with Chris Benjamin to discuss Legacies of the Shubenacadie Indian Residential School.
 
The Faculty of Education and the UPEI Aboriginal Students' Association are organizing the event.
MacLauchlan Prizes for Effective Writing: Deadline October 6

In July 2011, the family of Harry and Marjorie MacLauchlan of Stanhope, PEI made another leadership gift to UPEI to create a substantial program of awards to encourage and recognize student writing achievement. The gift is to honour H. Wade MacLauchlan’s twelve years of service as UPEI president and vice-chancellor, and to recognize the importance of effective writing as a foundational skill for academic success and lifelong learning. 

The MacLauchlan Prizes for Effective Writing is the largest such student-oriented program in Canada. There are up to 57 prizes available for returning undergraduate students who produced outstanding written work in the previous academic year (September 1 – August 31), as a substantive role in their academic course work or for the broader community audience, and who showed most improvement through a writing support program coordinated through the Webster Centre. 

There are also up to 3 prizes available for faculty or staff members, who have shown exceptional leadership in the development of writing among students at UPEI.

UPEI Panthers "Night at the Track"

UPEI’s Department of Athletics and Recreation staff, coaches, and players are gearing up for an exciting 2015-2016 varsity schedule. Help kick off the season by attending "UPEI Panthers NIght at the Track" on Thursday, September 17 from 5:00-7:00 pm at Red Shores Race Track and Casino.

This is a great opportunity to meet and greet players and coaches, hear about the vision of the department and varsity teams, and enjoy a reception. At 7:00 pm, the attention will move to the track where 16 student-athlete ambassadors will represent each the horses participating in the first two race cards of the night.

It's not too late to register for the North Atlantic Forum!

There's still time to register for the 10th North Atlantic Forum, Building Community Resilience, hosted by the Institute of Island Studies, September 16-19, in Summerside. The program includes close to 70 presentations by researchers and community members from across Canada and around the world looking at how rural communities use their local resources to build healthy and resilient communities. The conference kicks off with a free public event Wednesday, September 16, at 7:30 pm, at Summerside’s Harbourfront Theatre. A “fireside chat” with Dr. Kelly Vodden and Dr. Sally Shortall focuses on the effects of globalization on rural communities. The formal part of the evening concludes with the launch of a book stemming from the North Atlantic Forum 2011, held in St. John’s: Place Peripheral: Place-based Development in Rural, Island, and Remote Regions (ISER Books, Memorial University), as well as a special journal issue of the Scandinavian Journal of Hospitality and Tourism, arising from the North Atlantic Forum 2013, held in Holar, Iceland.

Request for Volunteer Clients for Foods and Nutrition 483
Dr. Debbie MacLellan is seeking volunteer 'clients' for a student assignment in Foods and Nutrition 483 (Professional Practice in Dietetics). This assignment involves three to four meetings with a student in the dietetics program at UPEI. The purpose of this assignment is to help students develop the skills needed to be effective nutrition counsellors. The student will assess your diet and work with you to develop some nutrition-related goals to help you improve your overall health. If you are interested and want to learn more about what you will be asked to do as a volunteer client, please contact Debbie at maclellan@upei.ca.
Submission of Research Ethics Board Protocols
Ethics protocols that involve ‘more than minimal risk’ must be reviewed by the full UPEI Research Ethics Board. The next deadline for submitting these protocols is Friday October 2 2015. They will be reviewed at the October meeting.  Protocols involving ‘more than minimal risk’ that are received after October 2 will be reviewed at the November meeting. 
 
Other ethics protocol submissions, including new applications that do not involve ‘more than minimal risk’, renewals, and amendments may be submitted at any time. They will be sent for delegated review as soon as all necessary forms are received. 
 
Please ensure that you download and use the current forms from http://www.upei.ca/research/forms. Use Adobe Reader to complete forms.
 
Submit the following:

The next deadline for submitting Biosafety Protocols including new applications, renewals and/or amendments is Friday September 25 2015. These protocols will be reviewed at the October meeting. Please ensure that you download and use the current forms from http://www.upei.ca/research/forms. Use Adobe Reader to complete the forms.
 
Submit the following:

Animal Care Protocol Submission Deadline - October 2nd

The deadline for Animal Care Protocol Submissions -- new, renewal, or amendment -- is Friday, October 2nd for the October meeting. 

Ensure you always…

Both the signed hard copy and electronic protocol submission must be submitted by the deadline date.

  • Submit one copy of original protocol with signature to AVC - North Annex, Biomedical Sciences Dept., Rm 2302
  • Submit an electronic copy to animalcare@upei.ca

Those protocols received after the deadline will be reviewed the following month.

The Committee requires at least one month for processing applications.
