Charting her own path in aquaculture
When Dr. Bernita Giffin graduated from the Atlantic Veterinary College (AVC) at the University of Prince Edward Island in 2009, she could have never guessed her journey in veterinary medicine would take her to Paris, France.
Climate change survey for PEI potato farming practices
A research team led by Dr. Xander Wang, associate professor in the UPEI School of Climate Change and Adaptation, invites the public to participate in a research survey focusing on potato farming practices in Prince Edward Island.
The data collected through this survey will be used in a research project that focuses on assessing the climate change impacts on potato yields in PEI. Toyin Adekanmbi, a MSc student supervised by Dr. Wang, will conduct the project.
Jolena Gillard and Elijah Miller named UPEI Athletes of the Year
UPEI’s Department of Athletics and Recreation celebrated the 2021–22 season at the annual UPEI Panther Celebration—Athletic Awards Gala on Thursday, April 7, recognizing outstanding student-athletes who have excelled in sport, the classroom, and serving the community.
This year, the UPEI Alumni Association’s Outstanding Female Athlete of the Year award went to Jolena Gillard on the UPEI Women’s Hockey team. The Male Athlete of the Year is Elijah Miller of the UPEI Men’s Basketball team.

The month of April is one of transition, including the change of seasons from winter to spring. It’s also a time to celebrate the achievements from what has been a challenging semester as well as to look forward to better days ahead.
UPEI adjunct professor invited to appear before House of Commons Standing Committee
Dr. Jeffrey F. Collins, an adjunct professor with the UPEI Faculty of Business, was recently invited by the House of Commons Standing Committee on Government Operations and Expertise to speak as an expert witness for the committee’s respective studies into Canadian air defence and the National Shipbuilding Strategy (NSS).
“The Russian invasion of Ukraine in February has brought much attention to the state of Canada’s armed forces and the importance of this country’s alliances, especially the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) in Europe,” said Dr. Collins.
Strengthening Atlantic Canada’s plant-based food and ingredient ecosystem
The following is a news release issued by Protein Industries Canada on April 6, 2022:
Today, Protein Industries Canada announced a new project to grow the plant-based foods ecosystem in Atlantic Canada. The project will see the Eastern Canada Oilseed Development Alliance (ECODA) work with Dalhousie University and the University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI) to explore and quantify the value of plant-protein food and ingredients in the Atlantic Region, while also increasing awareness about the sector.
Global recommendations released to reduce sedentary time at school
An international report with recommendations designed to counteract school-related sedentary behaviour in children and youth, exacerbated by COVID-19 pandemic restrictions, has been released by the Sedentary Behaviour Research Network (SBRN), in partnership with the University of Prince Edward Island and the CHEO Research Institute.
