Holland 250 Lecture - Stephen J. Hornsby
A well known geographer, historian and author will present the fourth in a series of free lectures presented by the Samuel Holland 250 Commemorations Committee on May 14.
Stephen J. Hornsby is Director of the Canadian-American Center and Professor of Geography and Canadian Studies at the University of Maine. Originally from southern England, Hornsby received his M.A. from the University of St. Andrews in Scotland, and his Ph.D. from the University of British Columbia, where he was a Commonwealth Scholar.
Hornsby has published extensively on the historical geography of northeastern North America and the Atlantic World. His book Surveyors of Empire: Samuel Holland, J.F.W. Des Barres, and the Making of The Atlantic Neptune has won three awards, including Publication of the Year Award from the Prince Edward Island Museum & Heritage Foundation in 2012, and the Pierre Savard Award from the International Council for Canadian Studies in 2013. The book examines the development of British military cartography in North America during and after the Seven Years War, as well as advancements in military and scientific equipment used in surveying. At the same time, he follows the land speculation of leading surveyors, including Samuel Holland.
The lecture, which is part of a monthly series commemorating Samuel Holland’s survey of Prince Edward Island, will be held Thursday, May 14 at 7 pm in Room 242, the Alex H. MacKinnon Auditorium in Don and Marion McDougall Hall at UPEI.
