Outrun Stigma

The charity event, Outrun Stigma, will be in coordination with the PEI Marathon - this year race weekend is October 17/18. We are encouraging all members of the UPEI community to do their part to help end the stigma surrounding mental health. There are 3 ways for students, staff, faculty, and administration to participate: Register! Walk or run in any of the PEI Marathon Races (5k, 10k, 15k, etc.)  and when they register via Race Roster they'll have the opportunity to make an online donation to Outrun Stigma. Volunteer! Marathon PEI is providing set honorariums to all of our volunteers and those honorariums will go toward Outrun Stigma. Buy a ticket! If you are unable to volunteer or participate during race weekend, you can purchase a $10 contest ticket at the Student Union.. The winner of the contest receives round trip airfare and seven nights accommodation to the destination where WestJet flies. Half of each ticket sold ($5) goes towards Outrun Stigma The aimed outcome of this charity event is to bring awareness and discussion to Mental Health, and ultimately help to eliminate stigma surrounding the subject. The money raised by all those who contribute to Outrun Stigma will go into the UPEI Student Union's Mental Heath Initiatives Fund. This fund was created after a number of students identified the lack of mental health prevention and awareness resources on campus in March 2015. Recognizing that all members in the UPEI community are affected by mental health issues, the goal of this fund is to enable students to plan and execute initiatives that raise awareness and address issues of mental health. Examples of projects could include speaker series, peer support groups, stress busting events during exam week, film screenings, workshops, etc. Another aspect of the event is that counsellors at UPEI Student Affairs do not want the exercise and discussion to end after October 18. They would like to start a walk/run club that will also help to facilitate dialogue and eliminate stigma surrounding mental health. They're also hopeful that some members of this club will dream up some positive initiatives and apply to the Student Union's Mental Health Initiatives Fund.
