UPEI Music Department Faculty Gala
The Faculty of the UPEI Department of Music will take centre stage in their annual performance on Saturday, February 8 at 7:30 PM in the Dr. Steel Recital Hall.
Faculty members featured that night include Karem J. Simon, accompanied by pianist Frances McBurnie, performing Alessandro Marcello’s Concerto for clarinet and Gregory B. Irvine accompanied by Frances Gray, piano in a performance of Giovanni Battista Pergolesi’s Sinfonia in F for tuba. Percussion instructor David Shephard will feature the marimba on A Little Prayer composed by Evelyn Glennie and pianist Frances Gray will perform East Coast Suite composed by island native Heather Taves.

‘Understanding for a Change project’ presentation
On Tuesday, January 28, UPEI’s Dr. Colleen MacQuarrie and her research team at the University will present new research findings on abortion access for PEI women. The presentation will take place on Tuesday, January 28 in Don and Marion McDougall Hall, Room 242 from 6:30-8:00 pm. The focus of the presentation will be on understanding the impacts of PEI’s abortion policies on women’s lives.
Jane Ledwell, Executive Director of the Advisory Council on the Status of Women, will moderate the event.

Diomira Concert
The UPEI Music Department is pleased to present the Debut Atlantic tour of Diomira on Tuesday, February 11 at 7:30 pm in the Dr. Steel Recital Hall at UPEI.
Formed in April 2011, the trio's critically acclaimed literary and globally-inspired program was immediately recorded by the CBC and has since enjoyed repeated nationwide broadcast, garnering audience support for a style that balances sublime music-making with virtuosity.
As part of their Debut Atlantic tour, Diomira will engage local young creators and composers to write music for the ensemble. These works will then be performed in concert, bringing a unique element to each community performance.

UPEI Blood Donor Clinic
UPEI will be hosting a blood donor clinic on January 30 from 11:00 am-3:00 pm at the Chi-Wan Young Sport Centre. This is an important clinic because of the lost donations this time of year due to illness. There is also an increase in the demand for blood as 8000 new PEI and NS donors are needed as part of the 160,000 new donors needed nationally.
Appointments are recommended and may be made by calling 1-888-2-DONATE, (1-888-236-6283). Walk-ins are welcome.

Astronomy Public Viewing
Come see some of the marvels of the night sky through our 8-inch telescope at the UPEI observatory. Potential viewing objects include the Moon, planets, nebulae, and galaxies. Volunteers from the Charlottetown Centre of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada (RASC) and the UPEI Physics Department will be on hand to show you the sights and answer your astronomical questions.
Our next viewing is scheduled from 7:00 to 9:00 pm on Saturday, February 8. Guests are asked to come to Memorial Hall, room 417.
This event is weather dependent. In the event of cloudy skies requiring a cancellation, the viewing may be shifted to Sunday, February 9 at the same time (if weather permits). This event is free of charge and open to all members of the public.
It is necessary to climb the stairs from the fourth floor up to the observatory, but an elevator can be taken up to the fourth floor.
