Come From Away Recital featuring Heather Taves

Heather Taves returns home to PEI and the UPEI Music Department on Friday, October 24 at 7:30 pm where she will present her solo piano recital entitled Come From Away. Drawing on the stories her parents, aunts and uncles told about their lives, Taves' recital at UPEI will trace the history of her family as refugees from Russia in the 1920s to 1968 when her family moved to Prince Edward Island. Heather’s musical journey will include pieces by Chopin, Debussy, Stravinsky, contemporary composer Keenan Reimer--‐Watts, as well as Taves' own composition “My Mom and Glenn Gould: A Two Part Invention”.

Four Pianists, Eight Hands: The Piano Collective

On Sunday, October 26th at 2:30 pm the UPEI Music Department will play host to a "triple header" at the Dr. Steel Recital Hall. The "Piano Collective," a group of four pianists playing eight-hand music on two pianos will make their debut in a performance featuring beloved music of J.S. Bach, Mozart, Glazunov, Mendelssohn, Moszkowski, and Bizet. The occasion also marks a celebration for Professor Emerita, Dr. Frances Gray who officially retired this year after serving forty-five years as Professor of Piano and Theory in the Music Department of the University of Prince Edward Island. Dr. Gray will be accompnaied by three alumnae of UPEI who all studied piano with her in the Music Department, Stephanie Cole, Morgan Saulnier and Jacqueline Sorensen Young. As a tribute to Dr. Gray's years of contribution to the Music Department, the afternoon will launch a Music Scholarship for outstanding student performers in the Music Department.

Mickey Place Memorial Basketball Tournament

The Mickey Place Memorial Basketball Tournament presented by Rodd Hotels & Resorts begins on Friday, October 17 with eight basketball teams from across Canada competing in the annual three-day event. The UPEI Men’s Basketball team will tip off against Saint Mary’s University, Holland College, and Crandall University, while the UPEI Women’s Basketball team will take on the University of Ottawa, Bishop’s University, and Cape Breton University.The tournament is named after John Thomas “Mickey” Place, a long-time friend of Panther Sport, a former UPEI student union employee, and a UPEI honorary degree recipient. Dog Talk: What is your dog saying?

People and dogs are excellent observers of body language and both use extensive nonverbal communication. But the two languages are very different and not always understood by each other. Dr. Anne Marie Carey, Department of Companion Animals, AVC, will discuss the basics of dog language to help communicate effectively with our canine companions. She will present some common situations and interpret them from both the dog's and owner's point of view. Dr. Carey will also provide insight into safe interaction between dogs and children. Chemistry Seminar

Join Dr. Christopher Rowley, Department of Chemistry, Memorial University of Newfoundland for a seminar on Wednesday, October 22, 2014 at 12:30 pm. Dr. Rowley’s presentation is entitled Multiscale Computational Chemistry. The seminar will be held in the Regis and Joan Duffy Research Centre, Lecture Theatre, Room 212.

2014 Gairdner Lecture at UPEI

Dr. King Holmes, the 2013 Canada Gairdner Global Health Award Laureate, will be on campus Monday, October 27 to deliver the 2014 Gairdner Lecture at UPEI. The lecture begins at 6pm in room 246 of Don and Marion McDougall Hall. The 2014 Gairdner Lecture is entitled "STI Research: Major progress, current challenges and future opportunities." Dr. King Holmes is a Professor in the Department of Global Health at the University of Washington where he is the Director of Research and Faculty Development, a Professor of Medicine, and an Adjunct Professor of Microbiology and Epidemiology. He is the Director of the U of W’s Center for AIDS Research, as well as the Chief of Infectious Diseases at Harborview Medical Centre. The Canada Gairdner Awards were created in 1959 to recognize and reward the achievements of medical researchers whose work contributes significantly to improving the quality of human life. They are Canada’s only globally known and respected international science awards, and Gairdner is the only national organization that consistently brings the world’s best biomedical researchers to Canada to share their ideas and work with scientists across the country. In so doing, it enlarges networks and enhances Canada’s international reputation, while providing a realistic and unbiased benchmark for Canada’s leading scientists.

Chemistry Fair

Join the Chemistry Department on October 25, for a Chemistry Fair from 1:00-3:00 pm in the K.C. Irving Chemistry Centre, room 225 in celebration of Chemistry Week. Chemistry 483 students will be showcasing a variety of demonstrations, including rainbow flames and elephant's toothpaste, as well as some hands-on activities including making slime and testing the pH of household materials. All are welcome to attend!
