Eckhardt-Gramatté Competition Winner to perform at UPEI

On Tuesday, November 4 at 7:30 pm the UPEI Music Department presents soprano Sarah Jo Kirsch, winner the Eckhardt-Gramatté National Music Competition. The competition is the most important annually held contemporary music competition for exceptional emerging Canadian performing artists in piano, voice and strings. Since 1976, the Eckhardt-Gramatté National Music Competition discovers, develops and promotes exceptional young Canadian performing musicians who show artistic proficiency, knowledge and keen interest in Canadian and international repertoire of the 20th and 21st centuries. Young artists, alternating annually in voice, strings, and piano categories, perform for two panels of nationally and internationally distinguished juries in three levels of competition. Sarah Jo Kirsch is a soprano/vocalist currently based in Winnipeg, Canada. She continues to make waves as a soloist with local ensembles – large and small – and maintains a continuing presence at the WSO New Music Festival, Cluster New Music + Integrated Arts Festival, and Groundswell, Winnipeg’s new music concert series. Sarah Jo will be accompanied by pianist Madeline Hildebrand. Madeline is presently on the piano faculty at Canadian Mennonite University. Upcoming engagements include a faculty position with the Rosamunde Chamber Music Festival, Randolph Peters’ The Adventures of Piano Woman with the Thunder Bay Symphony and a return to the WSO Soundbytes Series next season. Tickets are $15 / $10 for students and seniors and are available at the door, online at www.brownpapertickets.com/event/890309 or in advance by calling 566-0507. The recital takes place in the Dr. Steel Recital Hall, UPEI.

3M National Student Fellow Presentation

UPEI students, staff and faculty are invited to a 3M National Student Fellow Presentation entitled The Cult of Busy by Anita Acai on Friday, November 7, 2014 in Bill and Denise Andrew Hall, room 142 at 10:30 am. "Our society has an unhealthy relationship with being busy. We talk about it as if it is a badge of honour even though many of the crosses we carry might be pointless or unnecessary. University may be the perfect time for a much-needed intervention. Students, though they may not recognize it, have time and space to think, experiment and decide how they want to live and think, luxuries that will be harder to come by in later years. By gathering multimedia resources into a website, generating media attention and instigating campaigns on campuses, the 3M National Student Fellows want to challenge ‘busy’ as an ideal and ask the deeper question “What are you busy for?” Anita Acai, a 2013 National Student Fellow, will share engaging and meaningful insights about the ubiquitous "cult of busy" and talk to students, staff, and faculty about where the 3M project is at today." From 11:30-12:00 noon, Anita will lead an informal discussion on the 3M National Student Fellowship program which is sponsored by the Society for Teaching and Learning in Higher Education (STLHE). She will discuss her participation in the program and the application process. All students, faculty and staff who may be interested in learning more about this prestigious leadership development program are encouraged to attend. For more information about the award, http://www.stlhe.ca/awards/3m-national-student-fellowship/ The talk is open to all UPEI students, faculty and staff and is free of charge. Anita’s visit to UPEI has been arranged through the UPEI University 100 Program and generously supported by the Society for Teaching and Learning in Higher Education and 3M Canada.
