Ethics protocols that involve ‘more than minimal risk’ must be reviewed by the full UPEI Research Ethics Board (REB).  The next deadline for submitting these protocols is Friday October 25 2019. They will be reviewed at the November meeting.  Protocols involving ‘more than minimal risk’ that are received after October 25 will be reviewed at the December 2019 meeting.

Other ethics protocol submissions, including new applications that do not involve ‘more than minimal risk’, renewals, and amendments may be submitted at any time. They will be sent for delegated review as soon as all necessary forms are received.

Title: What can artificial intelligence (AI) do for salmon and the ocean?
Speaker: Dr. Beibei Jia
Abstract: The ocean provides an irreplaceable environment and critical resources to sustain our life on Earth. We have considerable knowledge of its ecosystem through research and practice across many disciplines. However, the vital interaction of the many components remains largely a mystery that could be addressed with an interdisciplinary approach and framework. Because of its cross-discipline nature, AI could become a platform and pathway to assist in the ecological, sociocultural, and economic assessment of the ocean ecosystem to our enormous benefit.

With the case studies of Canada’s conservation policies of wild salmon, we elaborate on the opportunities and challenges when artificial intelligence is integrated with veterinary medicine and a variety of ocean sciences. We propose to develop an AI application to provide better digitization and prediction analytics for the assessment of Canadian wild salmon conservation policies for integration into veterinary medicine and ocean sciences. Our ambition is to build out our initial success in this area to expand the application of AI for the benefit of numerous other areas in ocean science.

Abstract: The seminar will describe the development and application of new stereoselective C-C bond forming reactions to the total synthesis of complex bioactive agents. Specifically, it will outline a novel dynamic kinetic resolution of αß-unsaturated aldehydes, the catalytic asymmetric alkylation of homoenolates and the development of a concise, efficient and scalable total synthesis of the complex bioactive sesquiterpene natural product, thapsigargin.

In July 2011, the family of Harry and Marjorie MacLauchlan of Stanhope, PEI made another leadership gift to UPEI to create a substantial program of awards to encourage and recognize student writing achievement. The gift is to honour H. Wade MacLauchlan’s twelve years of service as UPEI president and vice-chancellor, and to recognize the importance of effective writing as a foundational skill for academic success and lifelong learning.

The MacLauchlan Prizes for Effective Writing is the largest such student-oriented program in Canada. There are up to 60 prizes available for returning undergraduate students who produced outstanding written work in the previous academic year (September 1–August 31), as a substantive role in their academic course work or for the broader community audience, and who showed most improvement through a writing support program coordinated through the Webster Centre.

There are also up to 3 prizes available for faculty or staff members, who have shown exceptional leadership in the development of writing among students at UPEI.

This exhibit is a partnership between the Mawi'omi Centre and the Roberston Library.

The much awaited reopening of Samuel's Cafe is finally here! Our soft launch will be on Monday, October 7th with operational hours of 8 am to 3 pm, Monday to Friday until further notice.
