The start of a new school year brings great opportunities. Not only is it a time to take new classes and meet new people, it’s the perfect time to try new fitness activities such as Aqua Zumba. Aqua Zumba (aka “Pool Party”) is a fun, easy-to-follow, invigorating workout. Inspired by Latin music, this upbeat class is the perfect stress buster and a fantastic way to burn calories. A 45-minute class burns from 300 to 500+ calories. Moreover, it’s free for full-time UPEI students! Anyone who can stand up in shallow water and is inspired by great music will love this class.

From September to December 2019, enjoy 6 weekly classes: Monday at 5:45 pm, Tuesday at 8:00 pm, Wednesday at 5:45 pm, Thursday at 8:00 pm, Friday at 5:45 pm, and Sunday at 9:30 am. For more information contact the Bell Aliant Centre at info@bellaliantcentre.ca or 902-569-4584 ext 0.

The next talk in the Franklin (Frank) Pigot Memorial Lecture Series at UPEI will explore how the spirit of the 1960s shaped the University. On Thursday, September 26, Dr. Alan MacEachern will present “A Child of the ’60s: Creating the University of Prince Edward Island” at 7:00 pm in the Faculty Lounge of SDU Main Building.

The PEI government began pressing for a single Island university in the spring of 1968. By spring 1970, UPEI was not merely up and running, but was holding its first graduation. The whirlwind nature of UPEI’s founding—with long-term decisions made in the very short-term—meant the new university was a product of its time: a time of visionary planning and respect for tradition, of religious authority and rising secularism, of student alienation and student power.

As part of UPEI’s 50th anniversary, the Robertson Library is presenting a lecture series to celebrate the historical roots of higher education on Prince Edward Island and its future. The series is named after educator Frank Pigot, honoured as a UPEI Founder for his work building the Library’s PEI Collection and University Archives.

Dr. Alan MacEachern is the author of Utopian U: The Founding of the University of Prince Edward Island, 1968–1970. He is a professor of history at Western University.

The Atlantic Veterinary College at the University of Prince Edward Island will hold its 31st annual Open House on Saturday, September 28, from 10:00 am until 2:00 pm.

Members of the public are invited to attend this free and fun family event where they can see all kinds of demonstrations and exhibits.  View a painted horse and cow;  see different dog breeds during the Parade of Dog Breeds; visit some farm animals;  learn how to dress for surgery, and much more. Children can bring their most loved stuffed toys for a check-up and treatment at the Teddy Bear Clinic. And they can have their faces painted and choose their favourite balloon animal.

Organized and run by AVC students, AVC Open House is one of the largest, most successful open houses in Atlantic Canada. The event is one of many activities taking place during Homecoming Weekend (upei.ca/alumni/homecoming), celebrating UPEI’s 50th Anniversary, September 25-28.

Maymester 2019: The Planning, Pitfalls, and Pleasures of Taking Students to Europe

Please grab your lunch and join us in the Main Building Faculty Lounge on September 25th from 12:00-1:00 pm for the first brown-bag lunch of the term.

This past May, Arts and Sciences faculty members took UPEI students on field schools to the UK, France, and Ireland as part of courses in English, History, Biology, and Religious Studies. In our brown-bag session, we will briefly introduce the planning and pedagogy that went into the courses, and, along with a few of our returning students, will discuss the joys and challenges of taking students abroad.
