Are you aware that cosmetic surgery on animals, such as tail docking in dogs, cattle, and horses, or ear cropping in dogs, is prohibited? These regulations—and more—are part of the new PEI Animal Welfare Act, passed into law in 2017.

How does the Act impact Islanders and their animals? Dr. Alice Crook, Coordinator of the Sir James Dunn Animal Welfare Centre at AVC, will provide a “big picture” of the Act, focusing on the evolution of a distressed-based model to a standard–of-care model. Dwight Thompson, PEI Department of Agriculture and Forestry, will speak about the rights and responsibilities of owners, and Mike Gilbertson, PEI Humane Society, will focus on how the Society handles animal welfare complaints.

Everyone is welcome. Admission is free, and refreshments will be served.

Take the CANRISK Tool to determine your risk for developing diabetes. We can do a random blood glucose and provide you with your results at the point of care. The UPEI Health & Wellness Centre is located at the W.A. Murphy Building North, 2nd floor (above the bookstore).

As of December 1, 2018 all employers in Canada must be compliant with the New WHMIS 2015 regulations. Here at UPEI this means that:
- All hazardous products have to be classified to comply with WHMIS 2015 regulations.
- All hazardous products must be labeled according to WHMIS 2015.
- All hazardous products require new Safety Data Sheets (SDS) to comply with WHMIS 2015.
- All UPEI staff, faculty, graduate students, and student employees are required to complete WHMIS 2015 training.
- An inventory of all biological, chemical or physical agents used, produced, or otherwise present at UPEI that may be hazardous to workers must be created and maintained. 

More details, including examples, templates and instructions can be found on the UPEI Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Department’s website under the heading “WHMIS 2015 Transition”. HSE staff are also available to assist you with any questions you may have around WHMIS 2015 and this transition.

Over the summer months UPEI was fortunate enough, with support from the Canada Summer Jobs Program, to hire two full-time students to assist us with labelling and inventorying hazardous products on campus. Unfortunately, they were not able to assist everyone on campus with labeling and inventory and we do not have additional support to provide in completing these tasks. 

If the space you are responsible for has not been inventoried and still needs to have hazardous product labels updated to WHMIS 2015 please review the information at: http://www.upei.ca/vpaf/health-and-safety/whmis-2015 and use the inventory template found here: http://www.upei.ca/vpaf/health-and-safety/whmis-2015/hazardous-products… as the December 1, 2018 deadline is fast approaching. HSE has obtained a limited supply of peel-and-stick tick-mark labels for workplace labeling of hazardous materials to assist in the labelling process and get you started. If you are interested in using these labels both Central Services at AVC and and the HSE office in KMB have a supply.

One of Moodle’s great recent features is access to the open-source content collaboration framework called H5P. H5P allows a user to create vivid online learning experiences that may help enhance learner engagement and interest within the online learning environment. Previous H5P workshops offered by the E-Learning Office have looked at interactive video and drag and drop interactions. In this new workshop we will introduce and show you how to create a few more popular H5P interaction types that feature the use of images. The Animal Care Committee does not meet in December. The deadline for Animal Care Protocol Submissions -- new, renewal, or amendment -- is Friday, January 4, 2019 for the January meeting.

The UPEI Wind Symphony, under the direction of Dr. Karem J. Simon, will be performing a full recital of contemporary wind band music on Thursday, November 15 at 7:30 pm at the Homburg Theatre in Charlottetown. Following years of performances at local churches, the Wind Symphony is using Charlottetown’s premier venue at the Confederation Centre of the Arts to provide its members, guest performers, and the audience with an optimal experience. The ensemble is in fine form, and recent performances in Saint John, NB, and Summerside have been enthusiastically received.

The centrepiece of the program is the Concertino for Four Percussionists by American composer David Gillingham. This work exploits the technical, expressive, and sonic qualities of the Wind Symphony’s extensive percussion section. Featured soloists include principal percussionist Ryan Drew and freshman Kendall Perry, who will be joined by UPEI music graduates Michael Gallant and Branden Kelly.
