Each candidate will give two talks: the first is a simulated classroom presentation about their research and the second will outline their vision for the PsyD at UPEI.

• On Wednesday, March 21 at 10:30 am, Dr. Raquel Hoersting will present her vision talk entitled "Clinical Training as an Integrative Approach: Service, Scholarly Practice, and Collaboration". The presentation will take place in MCDH 329.

Although the books come from CCPL, you will check them out and return them to the Service Desk in Robertson Library by using your UPEI Campus Card. Books can be borrowed for three weeks.

Each month there will be a new selection of approximately 50 books.

The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) has asked UPEI’s Research Services Office and UPEI’s Sociology and Anthropology Department to promote the use of knowledge mobilization (KM) in research at UPEI.

On March 21 and 22, Mr. Steve Jreige, Analyst, Public Health Capacity and Knowledge Management Division, Atlantic Region, PHAC, will be on campus. His areas of interest are (1) Seniors Health and Aging (2) the Built Environment, and (3) Emergency Preparedness and Response.

On March 21, 10 – 11am, Mr. Jreige will provide a campus presentation on KM in the UPEI Faculty Association Lounge, Main Building. He will speak about his role as a Knowledge Mobilization Analyst and how that fits within the PHAC, and discuss the KM program being implemented at PHAC.

On March 21 and 22, he will also MEET WITH any individuals or research teams who wish to:

1) Discuss knowledge mobilization and research findings, and how PHAC can help in the KM process
2) Learn about how KM can be built into a future research project, and how PHAC can help
3) Discuss emerging issues in the three fields of study to which he is assigned
4) Learn more about KM

Dr. Doug Marchbank, Nautilus Biosciences Canada, will present “Nautilus Biosciences – Development of Marine Natural Products and Future Directions in Blue Biotechnology” on March 14 at 12:30 pm in Duffy Research Centre, room 212.

Abstract: 
Nautilus Biosciences is Croda's new 'Centre of Innovation for Marine Biotechnology', which is focused on the discovery and development of natural products with various commercial applications. The microbial biodiversity within the marine habitat remains largely unknown and underexplored, thus representing a rich resource for novel natural product discovery. Although natural products have historically been an excellent source of bioactive compounds for pharmaceutical drug discovery, potential applications in other industries have mostly been ignored. With access to a diverse collection of marine microbes, consisting of nearly 6,000 bacteria and fungi, Nautilus has focused primarily on developing natural products with applications in the personal care industry. In this seminar, two recent projects that are moving towards commercial development and future directions under Croda International will be discussed.

Dr. Martha Mellish, of AVC’s Equine Ambulatory Service, will give a free public workshop, entitled “A pain in the gut: Managing equine digestive issues,” on Wednesday, March 21, at 7 p.m., in Lecture Theatre A, Atlantic Veterinary College, UPEI.

Horses have complex gastro-intestinal systems and can have equally complex digestive problems. The more knowledge horse owners have about these issues, the better they can understand and appropriately manage digestive conditions affecting their animals. Using a practical model, Dr. Mellish will explain the equine gastro-intestinal tract and talk about common medical conditions that can affect it.

Dorothy E. Smith is widely acknowledged as a major feminist thinker of our time, and perhaps best known for her development of Institutional Ethnography, a theory/methodology of discovery aimed at providing a sociology for, not of, people. Smith’s lecture will focus on the interface between her development of a critical sociology aimed at exploring and explicating governance in contemporary society and its roots in feminism.

Dr. Katie Hoddinott (AVC Class of 2012) will be on-campus next week interviewing for the open, tenure-track faculty position in small animal surgery in the Department of Companion Animals at the Atlantic Veterinary College. Dr. Hoddinott is in the final year of her small animal surgery residency/graduate student program at the Ontario Veterinary College.

As part of the interview process, Dr. Hoddinott will be presenting a seminar. Any interested faculty / staff are invited to attend. A copy of her CV and letter of application will be available from Laurel Fisher (fisher@upei.ca).

Dr. Hoddinott will present on Wound Management Techniques on Wednesday, March 14, 2018 at 12:30 pm in Lecture Theatre ‘A’, Atlantic Veterinary College.

Featuring visiting professor Dr. Nand Bardouille who will present Overcoming "small size" in the Caribbean.

The March 2018 Island Studies Lecture will take place on Tuesday, March 20, at 7 pm in the SDU Main Building Faculty Lounge on the UPEI campus and will feature Dr. Nand C. Bardouille speaking about the important role of regional integration in positioning Caribbean island states to overcome the disadvantages associated with “small size.”

The UPEI Health, Safety and Environment Department has an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) that can be borrowed/signed out for large gatherings, conferences, athletic events, etc. on campus if an AED is not in close proximity to the event location.

“Evil Isn’t Necessarily Wrong” will be presented by Dr. Todd Calder, Saint Mary’s University, on March 16 at 3:30 pm in SDU Main Building, room 211.

Most people (including most philosophers) assume that wrongdoing is an essential component of the concept of evil. This paper argues that this view is mistaken. A case is presented that appears to be evil and yet not wrongful on act-consequentialist, contractualist, and contractarian theories of wrongdoing. Proponents of these theories should accept that evil actions need not be wrongful. Furthermore, even if all evil actions are wrongful on the correct theory of wrongdoing, it does not follow that wrongdoing is an essential component of the concept of evil. Wrongdoing is an essential component of the concept of evil only if wrongdoing is, at least partly, what makes evil actions evil. A plausible theory of evil is offered that does not make wrongdoing (even partly) what makes evil actions evil. To explain how evil actions can be morally worse than merely wrongful actions without being more morally wrong, a distinction is made between the deontic right/wrong and the aretaic admirable/despicable moral spectrums. Evil actions are morally worse than merely wrongful actions by being more morally despicable, but not necessarily more morally wrong.
