The UPEI community was saddened to hear of the passing of retired faculty member Dr. M. Mujeeb Rahman on July 20, 2017. Dr. Rahman was an early member of UPEI's Department of Psychology, beginning his teaching career in 1970. Born in Hyderabad, India, Dr. Rahman received his MA in Psychology from Bombay University and his PhD from the University of New Mexico. Condolences are extended to Dr. Rahman's wife Asifa and children Gina and Moiz (BA '93). There will be a private family interment with a memorial service held at a later date. Read the obituary
Dr. Lynne O'Sullivan, a candidate for the tenure-track Cardiology faculty position in the Department of Companion Animals will give a seminar entitltled "From Cardiac Screening to Clinical Research: Insights into Doberman Pinscher Dilated Cariomyopathy" on Wednesday, July 26 at 8:45 am in lecture theatre 'A'. Dr. O'Sullivan's CV and letter of intent are available upon request at the AVC Dean's Office.

A seminiar entitled "Wind Turbine Condition Monitoring Research at the University of Calgary" will be presented by Dr. David Wood on Tuesday, July 25 at 3:00 pm in room 205, School of Sustainable Design Engineering.
The seminar will discuss a recently completed project on condition monitoring of generator bearings will be described along with future developments with WEICan to include gearboxes.

Montgomery Institute and the University of Prince Edward Island are pleased to invite you and your guests to a reception—complete with book signings, displays and artifacts, and special announcements—to celebrate the launch of “The Wreck of the Marco Polo” Virtual Reality Experience on Thursday, July 27, 2017 from 4:00 to 6:00 pm in the Robertson Library.
If you cannot attend the reception, but would like to experience the voyage back in time, you can do so in the Robertson Library on July 27, 12:00 pm to 8 pm; July 28, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, and July 29, 12:00 pm to 5:00 pm.

A reminder that following campus/building water shutoff of any sort, eyewash stations (plumbed or on taps) should be run to ensure adequate water flow is available when needed. If you have an eyewash station in your lab or area Health & Safety reminds you to flush your eyewash stations following a water shut off as you would during your weekly inspection checks.

This shutdown is necessary as part of the Memorial Hall Level One renovations. The work is expected to take approximately 5 hours to complete.

The entire University of Prince Island Island community was saddened to hear of the passing of historian and UPEI sessional lecturer Boyde Beck on Tuesday, July 18, from complications associated with pancreatic cancer. He died at his summer home in Cable Head East at the age of 56.
Beck was a historical research officer with the PEI Museum and Heritage Foundation and a long-time lecturer with UPEI’s Department of History. UPEI extends condolences to Boyde Beck’s beloved wife Anna MacDonald (AVC external relations officer and UPEI communications officer); extended members of the Beck and MacDonald families; and his many dear friends and colleagues.
Flags will be lowered to half-mast in his memory until Monday, July 24. Visitation is at the Belvedere Funeral Home from 2–5 pm on Sunday, July 23 with the funeral taking place in the chapel on Monday, July 24 at 1:30 pm. Read the UPEI article
It is with great sadness that UPEI announces that Lisa Rogerson, a second-year Psychology student, passed away at the IWK Hospital in Halifax on July 15, 2017 after complications from stage-four lymphoma. A benefit organized by her student peers and friends had been held earlier that day in support of Lisa and her family.
Lisa was devoted to her community and integral in the creation of the performance and visual arts series in the Dawson Lounge, SDU Main Building.
The University extends condolences to Lisa’s family and friends and asks that you keep them in your thoughts. Flags will be lowered to half-mast in her memory until Monday, July 24.

The next viewing is scheduled for Wednesday, July 19, 3:00-4:00 pm on the School of Sustainable Design Engineering building's green roof. The viewing is weather-dependent; if the weather is a mix of sun and cloud, we may be able to go ahead, but it's advised that you check the event status by clicking here or by calling 566-0745 shortly before attending.

Join Chris Vessey, Sidewalk Astronomers of Charlottetown, and Megan Glover, UPEI Physics Department, for a talk on exploring the evening sky with the Robertson Library's newly donated Sky Watcher telescope. The event will take place Wednesday July 19, 2017 from 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm in the main floor of the Robertson Library. Learn how to use the telescope, a star wheel, and about apps to help you get started in astronomy. Light refreshments will be served.

The deadline for Animal Care Protocol submissions, new, renewal, or amendment, is Friday, August 4 for the August meeting.
Please ensure you:
· Download the current forms from found here.
· Use the most current Adobe Reader to complete forms and only current forms will be accepted.
Both the signed hard copy and electronic protocol submission must be submitted by the deadline date.
· Submit one copy of original protocol with signature to AVC - North Annex, Biomedical Sciences Dept., Rm 2302
· Submit an electronic copy to animalcare@upei.ca
Those protocols received after the deadline will be reviewed the following month. The Committee requires at least one month for processing applications.
