Campus Notices
As part of the ongoing tree-pruning, maintenance, and inspection program, an Arborist has identified five trees on campus that need to be removed, they are either at the end of their life or have been deemed to be a safety issue. One maple is located on the west side of Cass Building, another maple in front of SDU Main Building and three locust in front of the Atlantic Veterinary College.
These removals are scheduled to take place on Saturday, August 5, 2017. Two trees will be planted to replace the removed trees, in either the existing location or at a new location on campus.
While the contractors have been instructed that the work be executed with the least possible interference or disturbance to the campus community, a certain amount of disruption is inevitable. We thank you in advance for your patience and understanding.

The Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), through the Strategy for Patient-Oriented Research (SPOR), has launched the SPOR Network in Primary and Integrated Health Care Innovation (PIHCI) –Programmatic Grants funding opportunity.
This funding opportunity is part of Phase III of the PIHCI Network and will provide funding for cross-jurisdictional research projects involving a minimum of four PIHCI member networks that respond to one or more of the Network priorities, which were determined in consultation with the PIHCI member networks and their stakeholders.
The objective of this funding opportunity is to support cross-jurisdictional programs of research that respond to the priorities of the PIHCI Network in order to generate findings that will guide evidence-informed policy decision-making, with the intent of having an impact on the health system for all Canadians within four years. Research questions must focus on patients with complex needs across the life course (a relatively small subgroup of the population with high health needs that accounts for a significant amount of health care utilization and costs).
A webinar information session will be held by CIHR on August 2 at 2:00 pm ADT.

The Faculty Development Office (FDO) at UPEI is growing! As part of this expansion, the FDO is developing new programs and services, for example: formalizing the Teaching Partners program into a Teaching Mentoring fellowship; developing a Peer Consultants program in each Faculty and School; establishing Curriculum Specialist consultants for consultation around particular growing needs and interests at UPEI; collaborating with E-Learning to expand e-teaching and learning initiatives.
The FDO will also expand assistance in preparing tenure and promotion files, teaching and research dossiers, grant applications, and award nominations, while developing reading and research groups and other programs around other issues related to faculty development across their career span.
A call for colleagues interested in serving on the Director's Steering Committee—with a commitment to serve for two years, to attend all meetings, and to take an active part in the planning and execution of new initiatives. The FDO also seeks colleagues (from every Faculty) interested in being peer consultants and curriculum specialists, as well as colleagues interested in e-teaching and learning concerns.
For more information and to get involved, contact Gerald Wandio, Faculty Development Office Program Director, at fdo@upei.ca
The University is upgrading building security systems by installing new electronic access card readers (SALTO) in place of all existing keyscan card readers. This includes the gated parking lots. Replacement will begin Monday, August 7 and will take approximately two weeks.
In preparation for the transition, everyone will need to ensure that they have an updated campus ID card as shown here. Only the new campus card will work, and instead of swiping the card it will need to be held to the scan device. If you don't have an updated card, you will need to visit the front desk at the Chi-Wan Young Sports Centre or the Registrar's Office. Please bring your old ID card to return—there will be no replacement fee.
If you already have an updated ID card, the first time you use a SALTO access point to enter a building, please hold your card to the device for approximately eight seconds, until the light stops flashing; this is programming your card. If you have to get an updated ID card, then you will have to visit the Security Services Office (Monday - Friday 8:00 am - 4:00 pm) to have it programmed.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Jackie MacPhail at jmacphail@upei.ca or 902-566-6034.
