Dr. T. Dylan Olver is a candidate for a faculty positon in physiology in the Department of Biomedical Sciences. He will also present a research seminar entitled “Cardiogenic dementia: isolating mechanisms using an integrative approach” on Monday, August 21, 2017 in Lecture Theatre C, AVC at 10:00 am, as well as a lecture entitled “Cardiac electrophysiology: the beat goes on” on Tuesday, August 22, 2017 in Lecture Theatre C, AVC at 2:30 pm.
Dr. Olver received his PhD in integrative physiology at the University of Western Ontario and is currently completing his postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Missouri. Using translational animal models of human disease, his research connects molecular & patient perspectives towards understanding pathological adaptations that accelerate vascular and vas-neural functional health outcomes.
Faculty are also invited to meet with Dr. Olver from 11:00 am to 12:00 Noon on Monday, August 21 in the AVC Dean’s Boardroom.
UPEI paving projects update:
- Parking Lot F will re-open on Wednesday, August 16th.
- The contractor has started the work to add an additional 7 parking stalls in the Small Animal Parking Lot.
- Paving of the perimeter road from the University Avenue entrance to McDougall Hall Reserved Parking Lot began on Monday, August 14 and is expected to take approximately two weeks to complete. Reserved permit holders for McDougall Hall Reserved Parking Lot are to park in designated Parking Lot B during this time.
This schedule is weather dependent and could change; updates will be provided if changes occur. While the contractor has been instructed that the work should be executed with the least possible disruption to the campus community, a certain amount is inevitable. Your patience and understanding is appreciated as we proceed with this project.

Over the next few weeks, ITSS will begin migrating departmental H drives as part of the Novell to Microsoft migration project. The process is relatively seamless for the users, the data will migrate in the evenings and the next day when people log on to the network they should see the H drive as usual.
Each University department will be contacted directly with further instructions when it is time to migrate their departamental H drive.Following the migration of the H drives, other drive mappings will begin, and then departmental printers.

Promoting Girls in Research in Engineering and Sustainability (ProGRES): You are invited to attend the final presentations for ProGRES at the School of Sustainable Design Engineering on Thursday, August 17, from 10:00 am to 12:00 noon, in Design Studio 202.
This summer, the School of Sustainable Design Engineering launched its first ProGRES Summer Program to promote engineering research and interest among young women in high school. Through ProGRES, high school girls in Grades 11 and 12 had the opportunity to participate in cutting-edge research projects independently with women faculty researchers and women student mentors, and the ProGRES students also met many women engineers in various industrial sectors in our province.

The Faculty of Science wishes to announce that Luke Poirier, PhD candidate from the Department of Biology, will be defending his thesis entitled "Exploring the expansion, impact, and a control option for Green Crab populations in Prince Edward Island Atlatic Canada". All PhD defenses are open to the public and Luke will present on Wednesday, August 16, 2017 at 1:00 pm in Rm 246, Don and Marion McDougall Hall.
Please note seating may be limited.
The deadline for Animal Care Protocol Submissions (new, renewal, or amendment) isFriday, September 1, 2017 for the September meeting.
Ensure you download the current forms, use the most current Adobe Reader to complete forms (only current forms will be accepted).
Both the signed hard copy and electronic protocol submission must be submitted by the deadline date.
· Submit one copy of original protocol with signature to AVC - North Annex, Biomedical Sciences Dept, Rm 2302
· Submit an electronic copy to animalcare@upei.ca
Those protocols received after the deadline will be reviewed the following month.The Committee requires at least one month for processing applications.

The Human Resource Department is requesting that all Tuition Waiver forms for the Fall 2017 Semester (September – December) be submitted no later than August 21, 2017. When completing the form, we ask that you include all of the required information in Section 1 (course name, time, start and end date, cost and the number of semester hours). This will help prevent any delays in processing your waiver. Please submit original forms directly to Human Resources, Kelley building, Rm 143.

Ethics protocols that involve ‘more than minimal risk’ must be reviewed by the full UPEI Research Ethics Board. The next deadline for submitting these protocols is Friday, September 1, 2017. They will be reviewed at the September meeting. Protocols involving ‘more than minimal risk’ that are received after September 1 will be reviewed at the October 2017 meeting.
Other ethics protocol submissions, including new applications that do not involve ‘more than minimal risk’, renewals, and amendments may be submitted at any time. They will be sent for delegated review as soon as all necessary forms are received.

Our newest version of Moodle now allows you to create drag and drop interactions. These can be created as part of a quiz or as their own stand alone activity. Instructors are invited to attend a workshop on creating Drag and Drop interactions. Two different dates are available: August 17 and 21. Long-time UPEI partner Farmers Helping Farmers (FHF) will be holding its annual BBQ Fundraiser on Saturday, August 12 from 4:00 - 6:30 pm at the Harrington Agricultural Research Station on located at 1200 Brackley Point Road. Tickets cost $30 for adults and $10 for kids 12-years-old and under. The price includes all you can eat of locally made salads, fresh PEI beans and potatoes, buns, hot and cold beverages, and strawberry shortcake dessert, and of course a thick juicy steak of Island beef, barbequed to perfection! All proceeds aid FHF projects in Kenya.
