World Environment Day, one of the biggest international days for the environment, took place on June 5, and the UPEI School of Climate Change and Adaptation participated in activities at the Canadian Centre for Climate Change and Adaptation in St. Peter’s Bay.

World Environment Day on June 5 is one of the biggest international days for the environment. Led by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and held annually since 1974, the event has grown to be the largest global platform for environmental outreach, with millions of people from across the world engaging to protect the planet.
UPEI Hockey Panthers continue to stack blue line with addition of Cam Morton
The UPEI Men’s Hockey Panthers have secured a commitment from Inverary, Ontario native Cam Morton for the 2023–24 season. The team is excited that their new blueline is taking shape with the addition of this strong defenceman.
Morton joins the Panthers after having spent the last four seasons with the Ontario Hockey League’s Erie Otters.
UPEI’s Dr. Xander Wang receives national award for significant contributions to civil engineering
Dr. Xiuquan (Xander) Wang, associate professor and director of the Climate Smart Lab at UPEI’s Canadian Centre for Climate Change and Adaptation, is the recipient of the E. Whitman Wright Award for Excellence in Information Technology in Civil Engineering from the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering (CSCE). The award was presented during the CSCE’s annual conference in Moncton, New Brunswick, May 24–27, 2023.
UPEI increases EV charging stations across campus
With the assistance of the Government of Prince Edward Island’s Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging Fund, UPEI now has 20 EV charger locations across campus in Charlottetown in addition to four at the Centre for Climate Change and Adaptation in St. Peter’s Bay.
Fred Horrelt, associate vice-president facilities management and construction at UPEI, believes this initiative is beneficial to the University campus.
UPEI holds celebration to recognize achievements of faculty and staff
Members of the UPEI community packed McMillan Hall in the W.A. Murphy Student Centre on May 25, 2023, to celebrate the achievements of their colleagues. During the event, the University Awards of Excellence and 25-Year Service Awards were presented to faculty, librarians, clinical veterinary professionals, clinical nursing instructors, sessional instructors, and staff members.
Dr. Greg Keefe, interim president and vice-chancellor, thanked the University community for contributing to the success of UPEI as a whole and its students in particular.

UPEI sprinter Zach Wilson earns prestigious athletic award
The UPEI Department of Athletics and Recreation is proud to announce that track and field sprinter Zach Wilson is this year’s recipient of the Rory Beck Outstanding Academic and Athletic Leadership Award. Wilson earned the prestigious award during UPEI’s convocation ceremony for the faculties of Arts, Education, and Graduate Studies on May 18.

What brought you to UPEI? Why did you choose to teach here?
When I applied for the faculty position at UPEI, I found it very attractive to teach at relatively small university, with the possibility to work closely with students. I could also pursue my research interests and explore possible collaborations with colleagues at UPEI.
