National Indigenous Peoples Day
In June, we commemorate National Indigenous History Month, a month to recognize the rich history, heritage, resilience, and diversity of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples across Canada. Canada has officially celebrated National Indigenous History Month for the entire month of June since 2009. Celebrate National Indigenous Peoples Day on June 21, the summer solstice!
UPEI international graduates learn about opportunities on PEI
On June 2, over 100 international graduates from the UPEI Classes of 2021 and 2022 attended an event to inform them about employment and immigration opportunities for them on Prince Edward Island.
At the event, they had the opportunity to network with local service providers like IRSA, The Employment Journey newspaper, ASDA, and PEI Connectors. This was followed by a panel composed of sector experts including the Construction Association of PEI, Tourism PEI, PEI BioAlliance, Health PEI, and the PEI Government Diversity Office.
UPEI graduate selected for North American Language and Culture Assistant Program
Abby Gibson, a recent graduate of the UPEI Department of Modern Languages’ Spanish program, has been selected by the Spanish Embassy in Ottawa to participate in the North American Language and Culture Assistant Program. Abby will be deployed to Spain from October 2022 until May 2023. She will be a Canadian cultural ambassador and will assist with language programs in primary and secondary schools in the region of Valencia.
“Congratulations, Abby!” said Dr. Doreley Coll, a professor in the Department of Modern Languages. “You make us all very proud."
Book launch
Everyone is invited to attend the launch of two books, one a history of tourism on PEI and the other related to the Island’s famous author L.M. Montgomery, on Tuesday, June 21, at 7 pm, at the Faculty Lounge, SDU Main Building, University of Prince Edward Island. The Summer Trade: A History of Tourism on Prince Edward Island, written by Dr. Edward MacDonald and Dr. Alan MacEachern, tracks the evolution of tourism on PEI from its beginning in the nineteenth century to the COVID-19 pandemic. Edited by Dr. Holly Pike and Dr. Laura Robinson, L.M.

Monitoring of bat populations in Atlantic Canada has begun for the 2022 summer season. Members of the public can help by calling 1-833-434-BATS (2287) to report sightings of bats in Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland and Labrador, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia. Callers will receive up-to-date and accurate information about bat-related topics, including general biology and ecology, bats and human health, bats in buildings, and conservation.
