UPEI graduate presents portrait of Florence Nightingale to Faculty of Nursing
Hanging in a place of honour in the Faculty of Nursing at UPEI is a black and white portrait of Florence Nightingale (1820–1910), the famous British nurse known as the founder of modern nursing.
The portrait was presented to Dr. Jo-Ann MacDonald, interim dean of nursing at UPEI, on May 12—National Nursing Day—by Katarina McCourt, a visual artist and a graduate of UPEI’s honours history program.

UPEI Athletics and Recreation names Sean Fisher head coach of UPEI Women’s Hockey
University of Prince Edward Island Director of Athletics and Recreation Jane Vessey announced today that Kingston, Ontario native Sean Fisher will be the new head coach for the UPEI Women’s Hockey team.
Fisher takes over the role from Bruce Donaldson, who retired at the end of the 2021–22 season after 16 years behind the bench. Donaldson guided the team to a 2012 AUS championship and was responsible for bringing the U SPORTS Women’s Hockey Championship to Charlottetown in 2019 and 2022.
Sister Act: Sydney Lawlor commits to UPEI looking to play alongside sister
For the second time this off-season, UPEI’s women’s basketball team is reuniting a pair of sisters.
Local standout Sydney Lawlor will join older sister Devon on the hardwood this fall, as the two will proudly represent the third generation of Lawlors to don the green and white.
The Lawlor name is synonymous with Panther basketball, and their history with both programs spans decades. Her grandfather, Ed, played for Saint Dunstan’s in the 1960s, while her parents, Peter and Stephanie, suited up in the 1990s.

Basketball prospect Lauren Hainstock gives UPEI Panthers enticing mix of size and versatility
As basketball continues to shift towards a positionless game, versatile players have become more and more valuable.
UPEI’s latest recruit, Lauren Hainstock, is one of those players.
Hainstock joins the Panthers as a six-foot-one forward, who has the skill set of a guard but the size to compete inside against the conference’s best interior threats.
New book celebrates history of St. Dunstan’s University
Award-winning author Leonard Cusack will launch a new book about the history of St. Dunstan’s University (SDU) from 1950–1969 on June 8, 2022, at 3:30 pm, SDU Lecture Hall, Faculty of Sustainable Design and Engineering building, UPEI.
Published by Island Studies Press, Caught in a Changing Society: St. Dunstan’s University 1950–1969 chronicles the golden years of expansion at an esteemed Catholic university and what led to the creation of the University of Prince Edward Island.
International Graduates Celebration Event
The Study & Stay PEI has partnered with the Office of Immigration, Holland College, and Collège de l'Île to host a special event for all PEI international students across the Island who have graduated or will graduate in 2021 and 2022.
