AVC Wildlife Service temporarily closes intake of wild birds

Recently, a highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) of subtype H5N1 has been confirmed in Atlantic Canada. Although this virus typically causes little or no harm to wild birds and waterfowl, it can result in severe illness in some bird species, domestic poultry, and, under certain circumstances, people.

This is an evolving situation that is being closely monitored by provincial and federal agencies. As a result, the Canadian Wildlife Service has issued new guidelines regarding the rehabilitation of wild birds in Canada.

Message from the President: Statement of support for Ukraine

The following message was also distributed to faculty, staff, and students via their @upei.ca email addresses.

Dear Members of the University Community,

On behalf of the University of Prince Edward Island, I am very concerned about Russia’s attacks on Ukraine and the impact this aggression is having on the Ukrainian community and around the world. For the last seventy years, there has been stability in Europe, but events over the past two days have shaken this world order.

Panthers recruit Cedrick Andree hoping to form dynamic goaltending tandem

UPEI Men's Hockey head coach Forbes MacPherson believes that goaltending is the most important position in hockey, often highlighting the play of his netminder in post-game interviews following wins. And it’s why he decided to add another talented goaltender to his roster for the playoff push.

Newcomer Cedrick Andree joins the Panthers after playing professionally with the American Hockey League’s Belleville Senators in 2020–21, followed by a stint with the East Coast Hockey League’s South Carolina Stingrays this season.

Meet Jane Vessey, director of athletics and recreation, and UPEI alumna

You have an interesting perspective to share with UPEI students: you were a student, a student-athlete, and now you work here as director of UPEI Athletics and Recreation.

I had graduated from UPEI in 2003 and travelled the world in my twenties and ended up living in Vancouver for 10 years when I returned back to Canada. When I decided to return to the Island to be closer to family and friends, the role of ceremonies and events manager was posted and I knew it was meant to be, based on my past experience working in events.

Sasha Weekes and Elijah Miller named Panther Subway Athletes of the Week

Every week, UPEI Athletics and Recreation recognizes two student-athletes for their achievements and dedication to their respective sports. This week’s UPEI Panther Subway Athletes from February 14 to 20 are Sasha Weekes (women’s hockey) and Elijah Miller (men’s basketball).

Weekes is a second-year business major from Hunter River, Prince Edward Island, and a goaltender on the UPEI Women’s Hockey team. The Panthers defeated the Dalhousie Tigers 2-0 on the back of Weekes who recorded 31 saves for her first AUS shutout.
