2013 Gairdner Lecture
The University of Prince Edward Island is proud to host the Canada Gairdner Wightman Laureate, Dr. James C. Hogg, for the 2013 Gairdner Lecture entitled “Developing new treatments for chronic lung disease.” The lecture will take place Tuesday, October 15 at 2:00 pm in McMillan Hall, W.A. Murphy Student Centre.
Since earning his PhD in experimental medicine from McGill University in 1969, Dr. James C. Hogg has remained focused on the study of obstructive lung disease. He has advanced our understanding of how both healthy and diseased lungs work, including asthma, and the effects of smoking and pollution. He built a world-renowned centre for pulmonary and cardiovascular research at St. Paul’s Hospital in British Columbia, which trains more than 100 professionals every year. He is an Officer of the Order of Canada, and a member of both the Royal Society of Canada and the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame.
The event is free of charge and open to the public.
Haunted House
The students of the UPEI Music Department invite all who are brave of heart to join them for their annual Haunted House at the Steel Building on UPEI campus on Friday October 25 and Saturday, October 26 at 7:00 pm.
Admission is $5 and includes apple cider or hot chocolate.
2013 Julian Jaynes Symposium on Consciousness
The University of Prince Edward Island and the Department of Psychology are presenting "The 2013 Julian Jaynes Symposium on Consciousness" on Thursday October 10 in AVC Lecture Theatre C. Our keynote speaker is Dr. Anand Paranjpe, Professor Emeritus, Simon Fraser University and his talk is entitled "An Eastern Perspective on Consciousness".

Mickey Place Memorial Tournament
The Mickey Place Memorial Basketball Tournament, begins on Thursday, October 17 with nine basketball teams from across Canada competing in the annual three-day event.
The tournament is named after John Thomas "Mickey" Place, a long-time friend of Panther Sport, a former UPEI student union employee, and a UPEI honorary degree recipient. The full tournament schedule follows:

Candle Light Vigil against Homophobia and Bullying
The UPEI Rainbow Alliance in partnership with the UPEI Action Committee on Sexuality and Gender Diversity and Student Affairs will host the fourth annual Candlelight Vigil Against Homophobia and Bullying on Thursday, October 17 at 6:00 pm, in the Quad in front of Main Building. This event is meant to draw attention to the tragedy of young people who take their lives as a result of homophobic and other forms of bullying.
Candles will be provided and a reception with hot chocolate and cookies will take place after the vigil in McMillan Hall. In case of inclement weather, the vigil will be held in McMillan Hall inside the W.A. Murphy Student Centre.
Get Swabbed! 2013
The One Match 'Get Swabbed!' event is an initiative of Canadian Blood Services to increase Stem Cell donors into the OneMatch Stem Cell and Marrow Network. This event is part of a nationwide university challenge.
'Get Swabbed!' is an annual coast-to-coast university challenge designed to engage and recruit young and diverse potential stem cell donors. This year marks the fifth annual event where university students across the country will be bracing their cheeks to determine this year's national champion. In just 5 to 10 minutes, you could change a life forever. Currently more than 900 patients are looking for a match in Canada. In addition, there is currently special need for 17 to 35 year old males who are ethnically diverse and in good general health to join the registry.

Jazz Concert
After playing to a full house at the PEI Jazz & Blues Festival this past summer, 2012 Juno nominee, Mike Murley returns to Charlottetown with his Septet performing October 19 at 7:30 pm at the Dr. Steel Recital Hall at UPEI. Along with Murley, on tenor saxophone, the band includes Tara Davidson, soprano and alto saxophone; Kevin Turcotte, trumpet; Terry Promane, trombone; David Braid, piano; Jim Vivian, bass and Ted Warren, drums.
