The Office of Commercialization, Industry, & Innovation is happy to host a virtual event with our partners at the Canadian Intellectual Property Office (CIPO) on November 23rd from 10-11:30AM via Zoom:
Bring your creations to life - why intellectual property matters.
Innovation starts with an idea—your idea. Are you developing your idea into something tangible such as building a brand for a business or creating a product or service to sell? If so, then you need to know about intellectual property (IP). What tools from the "IP toolbox" might you use? This webinar will introduce you to trademarks, patents, trade secrets, industrial designs and copyright, and explain how to assess and protect what’s distinctive to your inventions and creations.
Catherine Vardy joined the Canadian Intellectual Property Office (CIPO) in 2015. As an Intellectual Property Advisor for the Atlantic Region, Catherine helps people identify and understand the value of their IP, making a complex topic accessible to a wide audience. As the Network Liaison and Program Manager at Springboard Atlantic, Catherine worked closely with innovative SMEs, universities and colleges. Catherine also worked in Atlantic Canada as a Research and Innovation Development Officer with the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC).

The University of Prince Edward Island will observe the Transgender Day of Remembrance on November 20 by flying the Progress Pride flag in front of Kelley Memorial Building and lowering all flags to half-mast.
The Progress Pride flag is a combination of the traditional Pride flag and a chevron that includes the colours representing the transgender community as well as the BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, people of colour) communities, and those living with HIV/AIDS (and those no longer living).
The Transgender Day of Remembrance has been held annually on November 20 since 1999, after the death of Rita Hester, a transgender woman in the United States. The day calls attention to the transgender and gender diverse people who have lost their lives due to anti-trans violence, and raises awareness around the continued adversity that trans people face in our society.

This week's Tea(ching) Break focuses on assessment from two different perspectives. The first blog is a practical one for those preparing online assessments. You might even be thinking about this right now as we approach the end of semester and exam preparations. Check out the blog post How to Write an UnGoogleable Exam Question. The second blog discusses challenges in reforming assessment practices; two examples being issues of student agency and equity in assessment. Curriculum and assessment: it takes the two to tango considers some of our assumptions as higher education educators and institutions.
It’s a great and rewarding feeling to support someone in our community! The Study & Stay PEI Program is currently seeking 58 professionals as volunteer mentors. If you enjoy spending time with international students while helping them better understand PEI workplace culture, we would be lucky to have you sign up as a mentor today: https://studypei.ca/.
Mentors help our international students better understand workplace culture, improve their soft skills, and develop more connections in PEI. As a mentor, you'll be meeting with your assigned student 4 times between February 2022 and July 2022.
If you know anyone who might be interested in signing up as a mentor, please feel free to share this information with them too. If you have any questions, please contact us at studyandstaypei@upei.ca.
