This is a reminder that the UPEI Biosafety Policy requires that Principal Investigators confirm the security and complete inventory of all biohazardous materials being used or stored. This confirmation is due in November of each year.
Inventory records must be kept up to date throughout the year. Any inventory discrepancies noted during an annual lab inspection may lead to an in depth inventory audit by the Biosafety Committee.
To confirm your inventory is up to date, take the following steps:
1. Access your inventory at http://biosafety.vre3.upei.ca
2. Review your inventory record and update if/as necessary. Confirm the accuracy and your approval of the inventory record by following the steps listed below.
- Select User Menu (top right of screen) then My account (from the left side of the drop down screen).
- Click Edit (just below the user name)
- Click on Information (on the top right section of the screen).
- Scroll down this page. Below the box with the phone number, you will notice a box next to I accept. If you have not already done so, please read this section and, if you agree, please check this box.
- To report your inventory is up to date, please enter the date that you confirm this in the 2020 box.
- Hit Save! Task completed.
Thank you for your attention to this matter. If you are not yet a user of this site, but store or use biohazardous materials, please contact me to arrange access.

This week's Tea(ching) Break is a blog that is part of a special collection celebrating the centenary of Paulo Freire’s birth. The author of Classrooms as a Space for Imagination and Hope uses critical pedagogy as an entry point to explore how to create educational spaces in higher education that enable students to make meaningful contributions to research and society, and how traditional student teacher positions can be challenged through partnership. By re-considering the relationship between undergraduate teaching and academic research, he wants to re-establish the university as a place for collaboration between students and academics with the common purpose to co-create knowledge and meaning.
UPEI ChangeMakers is a new program operating from November 2021 through April 2022, aimed at developing, supporting, and celebrating UPEI students’ community work.
Program participants will either be matched with a local community group to engage in community service learning, or they can provide information about existing community service work. Participants will then receive free training and career planning support, be featured on UPEI's website and in the press, and will have opportunities to collaborate with other like-minded students.
Students can learn more and sign up on the Experiential Education website.
This program is being made possible as part of a new Business + Higher Education Roundtable (BHER) WIL Partnership with UPEI.

The UPEI Experiential Learning department is pleased to announce the creation of an Experiential Learning Initiative Fund. The fund will support new curricular experiential and work-integrated learning opportunities for the Winter 2022 semester.
Do you have an idea that would give your students an innovative hands-on learning experience or build a connection with local community and industry, but the cost to incorporate it has been a barrier?
Grants of up to $2,500 will be awarded for new curricular experiential and work-integrated learning opportunities and will be assessed based on innovation and impact. Priority will be given to creative pilot projects that have the potential for sustainability beyond the grant-funding.
Project proposals could look like:
-
A class visit to a business or worksite where students are able to put into practice a concept or process being taught in the class, where transportation is needed
-
An applied research or community based research project where funding could support innovative knowledge mobilization for the community partner and stakeholders
-
A community service learning project where students require a considerable amount of supervision by the partner organization and the situation warrants an honorarium
-
A field placement where the acquisition of adaptive technologies would reduce barriers to WIL for students with disabilities
-
An entrepreneurial project (with a community or industry partner involved) where tools or resources for prototyping enable students to move their ventures forward beyond the traditional scope of the course
Note: If you don’t have a community or industry partner identified or need help framing your engagement - we can help.
Please submit your requests via the form linked to below. The deadline for request is Thursday, December 2, 2021. Submissions will be responded to by Thursday, December 9, 2021.
