The Concussion Awareness Program invites you to participate in our survey to better understand how we can improve the care of concussed children and young adults on PEI. This study is being led by the Concussion Awareness Program (CAP) located here at UPEI.

The goal of the CAP is to increase public awareness related to concussion injury including the steps and protocols that facilitate recovery. The findings from this survey will help us refine our strategic plan.

The survey will take approximately 30 minutes with open-ended, ranking, and classifying questions. If interested, please contact cbeck8805@upei.ca or call 902-628-4300.

About this event

Join ACENET and Ocean Tracking Network (OTN) in our Introductory R for Ecologists workshop series. Over three weeks, we will explore data analysis and visualization with R, based on the Data Carpentry Lessons. Each week will build off the last – if you miss a week, check out the previous link to follow along!

No previous coding experience necessary.

We will start with basic R syntax and the R Studio notebook interface. Then, we’ll teach you how to import CSV files, the structure of data frames, how to deal with factors, how to add/remove rows and columns, how to calculate summary statistics from a data frame, and a brief introduction to plotting. The last lesson demonstrates how to work with databases directly from R.

Be sure to come prepared and have the appropriate software and data files downloaded. You will need to have a laptop with a Mac, Linux or Windows operating system (not a tablet, Chromebook, etc) on which you have administrative privileges, as you will need to pre-load specific software packages. Instructions are available at this link: Data Analysis and Visualization in R for Ecologists.

This workshop will take place on:

Wednesday, October 6th, 12:00-3:00pm (Atlantic)

Wednesday, October 13th, 12:00-3:00pm

Wednesday, October 20th, 12:00-3:00pm

Participants must register using their institutional / organizational email address (not a personal email, ie. gmail).

In consideration of the difficulties that exposure to scented products cause to sensitive individuals UPEI asks for your cooperation in making our campus a scent-free environment. We ask that all faculty, staff, students, and visitors refrain from wearing or using products with strong scents/fragrances while on campus. A few examples of products to refrain from wearing or using are: colognes/perfumes, strongly scented body sprays and lotions, hair care products with strong scents, strongly scented shaving lotion, air fresheners, scented candles and Aromatic Oils (used in aromatherapy).

UPEI’s Scent-Free Initiative Policy can be viewed here.

If you have any questions about UPEI’s Scent-Free Initiative please contact the Health, Safety and Environment Department at 902-566-0901 (Shelly Kavanagh) or 902-566-0516 (Liz Rostant- MacArthur).

To report an exposure to scented products please follow UPEI’s incident reporting process.

The UPEI Department of Music is pleased to present a virtual video concert of the UPEI Wind Symphony's 2020-2021 season, during which we were unable to perform for a live audience. Directed by Dr. Dale Sorensen, the program features works by Samuel R. Hazo, David Maslanka, Omar Thomas, Canadian composers Morley Calvert, Michael Colgrass, and Cait Nishimura, and small ensemble works featuring the clarinet, saxophone, and brass sections. The video will premiere on YouTube at this link on Thursday, September 23, 2021 at 7:30pm ADT, and will remain available afterwards.

The UPEI Teaching and Learning Centre is organizing a couple of reading groups for educators on campus this fall. There will be two groups, one in-person and one virtual. We have several book options, let us know which one(s) you'd like to read and discuss with colleagues. Take a look at the summaries and then let us know your preferences. Once we know the books and who is interested, we'll set up meeting times for the two reading groups. All the information you need in on the Reading Groups page, found under Learning Opportunities on the Teaching and Learning Centre website.  Questions?  Email TLC@upei.ca

On Thursday, September 30, UPEI will mark the first official National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, recently designated by the Government of Canada as a federal statutory holiday. This is a day for all Canadians to remember the tragic history and legacy of residential schools in our country and the intergenerational impacts they have had on First Nations and Indigenous Peoples.

In preparation for this day of reflection, the UPEI community is invited to gather on Tuesday, September 28, at 11:30 am, rain or shine, at the outdoor Murphy Family Amphitheatre next to the UPEI Chaplaincy Centre for events that include a smudge ceremony, singing and drumming with Heartbeat of Epekwitk, a tree planting, jingle dress dancing, and a presentation by Elder-in-Residence Dr. Judy Clark as she shares her knowledge of residential schools and reflects on her experiences in Indian Day School.

Every Child Matters t-shirts will be sold for $20.00 each by the UPEI Bookstore starting September 20 until supplies last. These t-shirts were designed and created by a local company, Mi’kmaq Printing and Design. We encourage everyone to wear these or any orange shirt to campus on Tuesday, September 28, as we come together to remember.

Join us in-person on September 28 and/or online for the entire week as we prepare to remember and honour the lives lost, the survivors, and their families during this first National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on September 30.
