The Sherlock Lecture is a free public lecture open to all. Pope Francis' biographer Austen Ivereigh will join virtually to share on the “From Francis to Leo: Reflections on the style of Church in the ‘change of era’", and will explore how Francis sought to reshape the Church to evangelize today’s very different era, and that the choice at the 2025 conclave was whether to continue in the direction defined by Evangelii Gaudium; the decisive election of Leo confirmed it. The Sherlock Lecture will take place on Tuesday, May 27, at 7:00 pm in Don and Marion McDougall Hall, Room 242. This lecture is in conjunction with the Canadian Catholic Campus Ministry National Conference being hosted by the UPEI Chaplaincy Centre.
The Department of Companion Animals will interview Dr. Natasha Walzthoni for a tenure-track faculty position in Diagnostic Imaging. Dr. Walzthoni will be on campus on Thursday, May 22, and Friday, May 23, 2025.
Dr. Walzthoni received her DVM in 2017 from the Atlantic Veterinary College, UPEI. Following graduation, she completed two internships and worked as an emergency veterinarian before completing a Diagnostic Imaging residency with the American College of Veterinary Radiologists. Dr. Walzthoni achieved board certification by ACVR in 2024. She currently practices as a veterinary radiologist in Spokane, WA, while additionally providing virtual instruction and case interpretation to students globally.
As part of the interview process, the candidate has been asked to present a 50-minute seminar on two separate topics: the first, a topic that would be appropriate to teach to third-year veterinary students; the second, to present their research interests:

Title: Advanced Mechanized Systems for Sustainable Food Production
Presenter: Dr. Travis Esau, Associate Professor, Dalhousie University
Date and Time: May 23, 2025 1:00 pm (Atlantic Time)
Registration:Click here to receive the Zoom link. The webinar is free.
Abstract: Wild blueberries are a perennial crop native to northeastern North America and are one of eastern Canada’s most economically important crops, with a 2021 farm gate value of $134.7 million CAD. Despite this, the industry faces significant challenges, especially in combating the more than 200 weed species that limit yield and interfere with harvesting equipment. Currently, producers predominantly rely on the uniform application of costly liquid herbicides for weed control, which is inefficient because weed instances occur intermittently, not uniformly. Traditional agricultural farming is not sustainable and requires new engineering advancements to remain competitive in local and global markets. The Canadian government’s new framework focuses on reducing the overall risk from pesticides by at least half by 2030. This research explores the development of a novel approach to weed management using smart applicators, including aerial drones, for spot-specific weed management.
A strategic enrolment management (SEM) plan for UPEI is currently under development by a Steering Committee and subcommittees. This plan will provide a forward-thinking approach from 2025–2030 to promote student success and achieve desired enrolments, retention and graduation rates, while aligning with UPEI’s overall mission and strategic goals.
All members of the University community are invited to attend a consultation session on Thursday, May 22, from 1:00–2:30 pm, in the lecture theatre, Room 104, of the K.C. Irving Chemistry Centre. An overview of the draft SEM plan, including five overarching goals, underlying strategies, and tactics will be presented. Following the session, feedback is welcomed and should be sent to the Steering Committee Chair, Dr. Melissa James, Associate Dean, Undergraduate Programs and Student Success, McDougall Faculty of Business at mjames@upei.ca, or the Office of the Vice-President, Academic and Research (VPAR) at vpar@upei.ca, by Friday, May 30.

Hello Everyone,
Cyber security is often seen as something that’s inflicted on a community of users in ways that make their digital lives much more difficult, but there is a train of thought that says better outcomes come from a process of inclusion and consultation. Toward that end, I am inviting any and all members of the UPEI community to an "ask me (or tell me) anything" session on Thursday, May 22, at 12:00 pm in AVC 207N. Anyone who is interested in anything at all to do with cyber security in general, or at UPEI specifically, is encouraged to join the session with questions, suggestions, or complaints. I will do my best to answer any questions, some of them truthfully.
This will be an in-person session. For those who are unable to be on campus, I will be hosting similar sessions in the future, alternating between online and in-person.
Who I am: My name is Dave Kubert, and I’m the new(ish) Director of Information Security and Information Management here at UPEI. I’ve worked in higher university IT and cyber security for my entire career and have been with UPEI since late January.

University of Prince Edward Island is hosting the Canadian Bureau for International Education (CBIE) 2025 Atlantic Regional Meeting in Charlottetown June 26 to 27. This event will focus on the future of international education through a series of sessions, roundtables and networking activities.
CBIE’s Atlantic Regional Meeting is an annual gathering of international education practitioners. It is an opportunity to share knowledge and resources and keep abreast of immigration and other changes in the sector. It also serves as an annual networking event for international education practitioners and is a precursor to the national conference held each November.
Registration is now open for the CBIE Atlantic Regional Meeting.
The next Island Lecture Series, hosted by the Institute of Island Studies at UPEI, will feature guest speaker Heidi Hearing presenting, “The “family farm”: A keyword in Prince Edward Island land politics. The lecture will be held in the Faculty Lounge of SDU Main Building on May 20 at 7:00 pm. (This lecture was previously scheduled for March but was postponed due to weather.) Admission is free and all are welcome.
Hearing’s talk will deal with the struggle to define the “family farm” in PEI and how this ambiguity helps or hinders the work of farmers, agribusiness, and government. It will discuss how participant definitions of the “family farm” contrasted with how they farmed and were sometimes at odds with their ideals. This talk will also shed light on the possible reasons that agribusiness and governments look to the pastoral romanticism of “family farm.”
Heidi Hearing lives in Charlottetown and has recently completed her MA in Anthropology from Memorial University. Her thesis is entitled: “Three keywords in the campaign against farmland consolidation and the loss of small farms through the lens of the Prince Edward Island Chapter of the National Farmers Union."
Art-Based Pedagogy has roots in both Education and Psychology. It can also be a very powerful tool for emotional debriefing to build resilience in undergraduate nursing students. Using Art-Based assignments can compliment traditional teaching methodologies in preparation for real-world holistic practice. Art can help students reconstruct knowledge - which can strengthen their experiences and creativity. Join us in viewing Art-Based projects from a Nursing Ethics course, linking their lived nursing experiences to ethical issues in everyday practice on May 21, at 12:00 pm, in the Teaching and Learning Centre - Robertson Library Annex, Room 230.
