The University of Prince Edward Island, along with the Canadian Commission for UNESCO (United Nations Education, Science and Cultural Organization), present Science as a Right, a panel discussion in recognition of the United Nations Human Rights Day on Monday, December 10, 2018 from 7 to 9 PM at the Beaconsfield Carriage House, 2 Kent Street in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. In this time of alternate facts, fake information, and psychological manipulation by seeming authority that tries to make us doubt what constitutes real science, it is important to recognize that even if science seems in conflict with immediate economic or political goals, making the truth public is essential for accurate economic and political decisions.

Once again MHW will be hosting “Let’s Listen”, UPEI’s Mental Health Week Wrap-up event. We are looking for up to six members of the UPEI community (students, faculty, and staff) who would be willing to share their personal and/or supportive experience with mental health. You would be asked to speak for approximately 5 minutes in a safe, relaxed, and non-judgmental environment, and then engage in small group discussions with the support of professional staff as co-facilitators. You will have the full support of a representative from the UPEI Counselling Services to prepare and work with you throughout the presentation.

If you’re interested in being a part of our Let’s Listen event and are willing to share your story, please contact Grace Gibson at ggibson@upei.ca by Wednesday, Jan. 16th.

We all use smartphones so here are a few simple tips to prolong your battery life: Reduce your screens brightness by at least 10%; set the screen to go blank in fewer seconds; turn off bluetooth when you don't need it; disable the wifi (if you don't need to connect) and download and install a reputable battery saving app. It should buy you some extra time.

The Island Lecture Series December lecture is Tuesday, December 11, at 7 p.m. in the SDU Main Building Faculty Lounge on the UPEI campus, and will feature Dr. Kate Bevan-Baker speaking about “Space and Place in Musical Identity on PEI: A Sonic Habitus.”

A culture is often defined by its music, language, and traditions that are passed down from one generation to the next. This lecture maps out Irish sonic territories across PEI and explore the musical place and mobility of the music's performers and listeners. Traditional music plays a pivotal role in the maintenance of lifeworlds of Irish settlers and their ancestors. Drawing primarily from Pierre Bourdieu's celebrated Habitus theory, this lecture explores the importance of investigating traditional music within the cultural lifeworlds of its performers in order to achieve a comprehensive understanding of PEI's unique soundscape. Focusing on cultural memory and a collective sense of place, migration history from Ireland to PEI is also explored, concentrating on ethnic fade and the recent surge of musical hybridity and transculturation that presently exists.

Admission to the lecture is free and everyone is welcome to attend.
The next lecture is scheduled for January 15, 2019. Mark your calendars!

For more information, please contact Laurie at iis@upei.ca or (902) 894-2881.
