One of Moodle’s great recent features is access to the open-source content collaboration framework called H5P. H5P allows a user to create vivid online learning experiences that may help enhance learner engagement and interest within the online learning environment. Previous H5P workshops offered by the E-Learning Office have looked at interactive video and drag and drop interactions. In this new workshop we will introduce and show you how to create a few more popular H5P interaction types that feature the use of images. The workshop takes place November 26th from 10:30 to 11:30 am in Room 265 of the Robertson Library. REGISTER

Transgender Day of Remembrance was created in 1999 by Gwendolyn Ann Smith, a transgender woman and activist, to memorialize the murder of Rita Hester in Allston, Massachusetts. What began as a web-based initiative has now grown into an international event observed annually on November 20. International Transgender Day of Remembrance commemorates the trans, two-spirit and non-binary people who have lost their lives to transphobic violence. Because of the way we collect statistics and record crimes, Canada has no real information about the rates of violence faced by trans Canadians. But we do know trans and non-binary people – particularly trans women of colour – are at a higher risk for experiencing violence and/or being killed because of who they are. It is important to remember those who have lost their lives and raise awareness, compassion, and empowerment for the trans community. 

This year, the Honourable Robert Mitchell, Minister of Health and Wellness, will read a statement in, and a Trans flag will be flown at, the PEI Legislature to recognize Transgender Day of Remembrance. UPEI will also fly the Trans flag on November 20. 

The Faculty of Education formally announces the upcoming PhD defense by Olive Bryanton. 

Olive will be defending her dissertation titled "Pioneers in Aging: Voices of women 85 years and older aging in place in rural communities".

For the second time, the pinnacle of motorsport, the Sustainable Alternative Novel Design Intramural (SANDI) Race of First Year, will be held at the Mount Academy on Monday, November 19 at 12:30 p.m. (weather permitting). This year's contest includes a speed race, slalom, and Concours competition.

The annual UPEI Global Village Multicultural Festival takes place on Saturday, November 17 at 6:00 pm in McMillan Hall of the W.A. Murphy Student Centre at UPEI. The Global Village Organizing Committee is excited to invite to the community to celebrate the diversity and friendship of our beautiful island by attending this free event.

The festival brings together various ethno-cultural groups and community organizations in an effort to build a more comprehensive working model of the area’s cultural mosaic. To celebrate this rich heritage, UPEI students host an annual multicultural festival to gather cultural representation from the university and PEI. The Global Village is an exciting opportunity to bring domestic and international students and community members together to collaborate, promote, explore and learn about each other’s cultural background in an interactive and engaging way.

The elevator in Steel Building will be out of service until late the week of November 19th.  This closure is due to a hardware issue in the control board. The Island Lecture Series November lecture is Tuesday, November 20, at 7 p.m. in the SDU Main Building Faculty Lounge on the UPEI campus, and will feature Dr. Joseph Glass speaking about “The Life and Times of Dr. Leo Frank: A Jewish Fox Rancher.”

Hidden away in Stratford, a small municipal park is named in memory of a former resident, Dr. Leo Frank, a unique individual in the Jewish and general history of PEI. In 1915 he established the Rosebank Fur Farms: a profitable business and showcase for black silver fox ranching as featured in many postcards, stereoscope cards, articles in North America newspapers, and a motion picture. A mysterious character, he made quite an impression on Islanders and his economic, social, and cultural activities were often discussed in the local press. However, he did not draw attention to his Jewishness until after his marriage in 1935. Although the ranch ceased operations in 1944, he and his wife Ruchamah lived at Rosebank until 1958. The lecture highlights the story of the man memorialized in this green space in Stratford.

The public is invited to the Harry Baglole Memorial Public Symposium in Island Studies, “Measuring Quality of Life on Prince Edward Island,” on Thursday, November 22, 7-9 p.m., at UPEI’s MacKinnon Auditorium, Room 242, McDougall Hall. This event is sponsored by UPEI’s Institute of Island Studies, in conjunction with UPEI Research Services. 

The principal speaker will be Gwen Colman, who, in 1997, along with her husband Ron, founded Genuine Progress Index (GPI) Atlantic, a pioneering research organization in creating new measures of wellbeing and progress. Gwen will be speaking about GPI’s work in collaborative development of wellbeing measures with communities in Bhutan, New Zealand, Thailand, and Nova Scotia. Recently, GPI has worked with a network of universities and NGOs in Southeast Asia, developing a methodology for collaborative development of wellbeing measures at the community level. She will speak about recent work in two communities in Thailand, and about previous work with the creation of Community GPIs in two communities in Nova Scotia. Gwen will identify the elements for creating successful community partnerships to measure wellbeing and their resultant impact. 

Joining Gwen Colman are panelists Dr. Jim Randall and Wendy MacDonald, who will address the relevance of GPIs to the health and prosperity of this island. The symposium will be chaired by Andrew Lush, member of the Institute of Island Studies Advisory Committee.

Following the presentations, there will be ample time for discussion and questions from the floor. Admission is free and everyone is cordially invited to attend. 

The symposium series is being newly renamed after Harry Baglole, the Institute of Island Studies' first Director, who passed away in May. Harry was the architect of many Public Symposia over the years, born out of his passionate vision for strong, Prince Edward Island-made, public policy frameworks.

Did you know that it is illegal to travel with dogs, and other companion animals, unsecured in the back of a pickup truck? Are you aware that cosmetic surgery on animals, such as tail docking in dogs, cattle, and horses, or ear cropping in dogs, is prohibited? These regulations—and more—are part of the new PEI Animal Welfare Act, passed into law in 2017.

How does the Act impact Islanders and their animals? Dr. Alice Crook, Coordinator of the Sir James Dunn Animal Welfare Centre at AVC, will provide a “big picture” of the Act, focusing on the evolution of a distressed-based model to a standard–of-care model. Dwight Thompson, PEI Department of Agriculture and Forestry, will speak about the rights and responsibilities of owners, and Mike Gilbertson, PEI Humane Society, will focus on how the Society handles animal welfare complaints.

This event is Tuesday, November 20 at 7:00 pm in AVC Lecture Theatre A.

Robertson Library, WUSC, and the Rotaract Club of UPEI will be presenting the award-winning film What Tomorrow Brings on Thursday, November 15th at 6 pm in Room 312, Robertson Library. 

Directed by Beth Murphy, the documentary showcases the challenges of young Afghan girls in a village recently freed from Taliban control.

The purpose of the film will be to raise money for the Shine A Light Program, an initiative that provides women and girls within refugee camps the opportunity to better their education prospects.

Admission is free, but there will be donations accepted at the door. Any amount can make a difference in someone's life.

Games are compelling for young and old alike. Adding game elements to your course is one way of enhancing your students' engagement. In this workshop you will learn about basic game elements and how they can be used both in online and face-to-face teaching environments. Be sure to bring a set of headphones or earbuds with you. Douglas Gibson is Canada’s most famous living book publisher and editor. In his 45-year career, he edited and published luminous constellations of Canadian authors including Alice Munro, Pierre Trudeau, Alistair MacLeod, Ken Dryden, Brian Mulroney, Hugh MacLennan, Robertson Davies, W.O. Mitchell, Mavis Gallant, and Barry Broadfoot.

Gibson will tell stories about his work and friendships with Canada’s celebrated authors at the next Winter’s Tales Authors Reading Series event on Tuesday, November 20 at 7:30 pm in the Carriage House of Charlottetown’s Beaconsfield Historic House.

Gibson’s show is hosted by the UPEI English Department, with support from the UPEI Dean of Arts and The Canada Council for the Arts. Admission is free. All are welcome
