Registration for the University of Prince Edward Island’s popular Faculty Development Summer Institute on Active Learning is now available. REGISTER
Here are a few important details:
• The Institute will be held from the evening of July 23rd till the evening of July 26th.
• The venue is the lovely Stanley Bridge Resort in Stanley Bridge, PEI. The Resort has set aside a block of rooms for workshop participants. If you wish to stay there, you can reserve your room by contacting the resort:

• When you reserve your room, mention that you are a participant in FDSI, and you will get a 10% discount. The Resort asks that you book your room by June 22nd at the latest.
• Registration for the workshop will be $800.00 CDN, all taxes and fees included. That fee covers all learning materials; all breakfasts and lunches plus two nutrition breaks a day; the Monday-night reception; and the Thursday-night barbeque banquet. There will be an extra charge of $50.00 for each guest you bring to the banquet. If you are interested in the optional deep-sea fishing expedition, there will also be an extra charge (which you can pay once you have arrived).
• The Resort is a beautiful old Island venue that is not, unfortunately, wheelchair accessible.
• Because there is a limit of 30 participants, please register as soon as possible and by June 15th at the latest.

There will be a UPEI biosafety refresher training session on Thursday June 14, 2018 9:00 am – 11:30 am in AVC, room 287N.
This session is required for those who attended the Basic Biosafety course in May June 2015 or earlier. It is not a substitute for Basic Biosafety. Topics to be covered include a review of basic biosafety principles, a practical approach to spill cleanup, and an update on what’s new at UPEI in the field of biosafety.
To attend the Biosafety Refresher course, you must pre-register by contacting Kathryn Harrison, before June 4, 2018 by email (kharrison@upei.ca) or by phone (902-566-0901).

There will be a UPEI Basic Biosafety training session on Thursday June 7, 2018, 9:00 am – 12:30 pm in AVC, room 287N
Topics to be covered include basic biosafety principles and how they are applied at the University of Prince Edward Island, as well as biosecurity training. This session is open to everyone including graduate students.
Please note: those who attended training in 2015 or earlier are currently due for the Biosafety Refresher Course.

The Bachelor of Integrated Studies degree program is a an opportunity for adult students to earn a UPEI degree with flexibility to pursue individual interests and have prior learning recognized. High school completion is not required for entry to this program. All are welcome to attend this casual session on 25 at 12:00-12:40 pm in Room 210, Robertson Library. You may be eligible to receive funding for courses.

Providing content for a course is pretty easy to do. Figuring out how to explain to students what that content should do to them and for them is far more challenging. There are numerous ways to describe learning and just as many opinions as to which is best. Are learning targets even necessary? The Folklore Studies Association of Canada / L’Association canadienne d’ethnologie et de folklore will be holding its annual meeting in SDU Main Building on the University of Prince Edward Island in collaboration with the Institute of Island Studies from May 25 to 27, 2018.
This year’s theme, “Carried on the Waves: Contemporary Currents in Folklore and Ethnology / Porté par les Vagues: Courants Actuels d’Ethnologie et de Folklore,” inspires researchers to explore the flow of expression among various groups over time and place.

Games are compelling for young and old alike. Adding game elements to your course is one way of enhancing your students' engagement. In this workshop you will learn about basic game elements and how they can be used both in online and face-to-face teaching environments. Offered by the E-Learning Office, this workshop will take place on Monday, June 4th from 2:00 to 3:00 pm in Room 265 of the Robertson Library. REGISTER
On Wednesday, May 23 from 8:00 pm until midnight (4 hours), ITSS will be performing an upgrade on the student printing service and the E-Learning service (Moodle).
During this time, faculty, staff and students may be unable to access these services.
Moodle will be inaccessible from 8:00 pm until the upgrade is complete. The upgrade is expected to be complete within two hours. We advise all students and faculty to retrieve any materials they may need from their Moodle courses before 8:00pm in order to not disrupt any teaching or studying during this time.
Maintenance on the student printing service is expected to occur between 9:00 pm-12:00 am. Printing from campus labs and classrooms may experience delays during this time.

This 12-month cohort-model program is designed for those who have completed an undergraduate degree and wish to continue into graduate studies. Anyone interested in learning more about this new program is invited to participate in one of two "virtual" information sessions: Thursday, May 17th or Thursday, May 24th from 12:00-12:30. This session will be offered through Blackboard Collaborate. A link to join the session will be provided to all who register.

Planning has started for this year’s Safety Week to be held September 24-28, 2018.
Although safety is a constant component of our work, study, and play here at UPEI; Safety Week is a dedicated time to bring safety awareness through fun and interactive ways while providing education and training opportunities to enhance general campus safety and strengthen UPEI’s commitment to providing a healthy and safe environment to work, study or visit.
The Health, Safety and Environment Department is looking for the following:
- Volunteers to serve on the Safety Week Planning Committee
- Ideas for activities and/or education sessions, themes, speakers, and topics of interest for this year’s events
- Input on last year’s Safety Week that could help shape this year’s events
- Names and contact information of businesses or community organizations who would have an interest in participating in Safety Week (i.e. a booth or interactive activity at tradeshow/fair)

How is my course going and how am I doing? With the semester near half over, these are great questions to ask your students since there's still time to make minor changes that could have a major impact on overall student learning outcomes. In this workshop you will learn what kinds of questions to ask to help you get the feedback you need from your students.
You will also learn how to create a quick online survey for your questions that will make data collection and analysis easy. Offered by the E-Learning Office this workshop will take place on Monday, May 28th from 2:00 to 3:00 pm in Room 265 of the Robertson Library. REGISTER
The University of Prince Edward Island invites applications from emerging leaders for a Tier II Canada Research Chair in Climate Change and Adaptation. This position is subject to final budgetary approval.
This will be a tenure stream appointment at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor at the University of Prince Edward Island in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, conditional on the successful applicant being approved as a Tier II Canada Research Chair by the CRC Secretariat. The UPEI community joins all Islanders in sending condolences to the McCarthy family on the tragic passing of their son and brother Brodie as a result of an accident during a high school rugby game.
This tragedy impacts the entire community and UPEI Student Affairs wishes to remind students that counselling services are available through the summer months as well as during the academic year if they need support. There are four counsellors available from 8 am–4 pm, Monday to Friday.
