Please be advised that the Government of Canada is once again sponsoring the Canada Summer Jobs program designed to help employers create summer job opportunities for students.  Canada Summer Jobs provides funding to not-for-profit organizations, public-sector employers and small businesses to create summer job opportunities for young people aged 15 to 30 years who are full-time students intending to return to their studies in Fall 2016.

Public and private-sector employers are eligible for a wage subsidy of up to 50% of the provincial/territorial adult minimum hourly wage – in PEI the minimum wage will be $10.75 an hour as from June 1, 2016. The process of applying for Canada Summer Jobs has changed this year. To apply for this Program you will need to make an appointment with Monique Geurts, Human Resources, 566-0515. The closing date for applications is February 26, 2016.

As part of the nationwide NBA All-Star 2016 program, UPEI is proud to host former NBA player Jerome Williams and All-Star-themed basketball activities on the UPEI campus, January 8-9, 2016.

The BMO NBA All-Star Kidsfest will take place at the Chi Wan Young Sports Centre on Friday, January 8 from 5:30-8 pm. The event will feature Jr. NBA Clinics and NBA Cares activities for all ages. A youth art program gives fans a chance to design a canvas that will be displayed during NBA All-Star 2016 in February in Toronto.

The Bell NBA All-Star Challenge, presented by AIR MILES, will take place from 12 - 3 pm and in the lead-up to the Panther Women's and Men's Basketball home games on January 9. The Challenge is looking for Island's best three-point shooters, skills challenge competitors, and dunkers! The winner of the competition will be awarded an all-expenses paid trip to compete for a national title at NBA All-Star 2016 in Toronto. It's free to enter!

The Canadian Council on Animal Care (CCAC) requires that all personnel involved with the use of animals in research, teaching, testing and service take this course.  (A refresher course is required every 5 years.)

The call for nominations for appointment to the rank of Professor Emeritus is now open. Please note that only UPEI faculty are permitted to nominate faculty to professor emeritus. The deadline to submit nominations is Friday, January 15, 2016. Nominations should be forwarded to Dr. Shannon Murray, Chair of the Professor Emeritus Evaluation Committee, Department of English, UPEI, 550 University Ave., Charlottetown, PE C1A 4P3.

The Professor Emeritus Evaluation Committee will consider all nominees and forward its recommendations to Senate. Senate is the final approval body and will notify nominees of its decision. Inquiries may be directed to Dr. Murray at smurray@upei.ca.

Harmonie Richard, Lead Student Mentor for Accessibility Services has created a 10-15 minute presentation on Accessibility at UPEI.  This presentation will cover services available to all students to help them on their academic journey, and the importance of being mindful of differences.

During the first 2 weeks of school Harmonie and Accessibility Student Mentors will be speaking to classes.  If you would like the presentation to be given to your class, please contact Harmonie Richard at studentmentor@upei.ca.

The Campus Life Lounge in Student Affairs is looking for a used gaming system to have in the lounge for student use in the evenings throughout the semester. We already have a number of board games and other events scheduled to help students connect and meet new friends, but would also like to provide a video game system to host tournaments and have fun in the lounge. If you have an older Wii or Game Cube that is collecting dust in your basement that you would like to donate, we would be happy to take it off your hands! The Healthy Campus Committee is pleased to offer $100 subsidy grants for current UPEI employees (student staff not eligible for grant) for this academic year. We have a total of 6 grants left. The grant can be used towards the cost of the small group training programs or the Healthy U Club Program.  http://www.upei.ca/ar/programs

Healthy U Program

UPEI Fitness and Simply For Life are partnering to provide a Healthy U program. The eight-week program will focus on exercise and healthy eating. A winning combination when it comes to weight loss and physical fitness! The program involves two training sessions per week, one weigh-in and healthy eating meeting per week. Start Date: January 11.

Weekly weigh-in, meal plan, log book and healthy eating discussion/presentation with Simply For Life consultant: Mondays 5:00 pm – 5:45 pm

Training sessions: Tuesdays and Thursdays, 5:00 pm – 5:45 pm.

Cost: $169 + taxes for Sports Centre members; $209 + taxes for non-members

The University of Prince Edward Island invites the nomination of candidates for honorary degrees to be conferred at Convocation in May 2016.

Honorary degrees are conferred honoris causa, “for the sake of honour,” and are intended to recognize outstanding provincial, national, and international contributions in any field(s) of endeavour. Contributions should reflect extraordinary intellectual or artistic achievements or significant service to society at a standard of excellence that merits the University’s highest honour.

 As of December 1, 2015 the Human Pathogens and Toxins Act (HPTA) is in full force. If you produce, use, transfer, import, dispose of, or EVEN JUST STORE human (zoonotic) pathogens and toxins, it applies to you.  To update those impacted by this legislation, there will be a short information session on December 18th at 2:30 pm in SDU Main Building.  It will cover what you need to know, and what you need to do under the law.  Please register by contacting Angela at adeighan@upei.ca or 902-628-4308, providing your name and contact information.

·        Use the most current Adobe Reader to complete forms and only current forms will be accepted.

Both the signed hard copy and electronic protocol submission must be submitted by the deadline date.

·        Submit one copy of original protocol with signature to AVC - North Annex, Biomedical Sciences Dept., Rm 2302

·        Submit an electronic copy to animalcare@upei.ca

Those protocols received after the deadline will be reviewed the following month.

The Committee requires at least one month for processing applications.

Thank you, Mark Leggott!  For the past nine years, the L.M. Montgomery Institute Management Committee, which he chaired, has benefited from Mark Leggott's considerable digital and technical expertise and creativity. Most recently, he has refurbished the LMMI website, which is soon to be launched. The new Chair of the LMMI is Dr. Philip Smith, Professor of Psychology, who has a long history of supporting the LMMI's outreach, research, and biennial international conferences.
