UPEI Community Bulletin: University and UPEI Faculty Association agree to tentative deal

The University of Prince Edward Island and the UPEI Faculty Association (UPEI FA), Bargaining Unit 1 and Bargaining Unit 2, reached a tentative Collective Agreement on Friday, April 14, 2023.

Details of the settlement will be shared with the relevant parties by their respective bargaining teams. The agreement will need to be ratified by members of the UPEI FA and the University’s Board of Governors before any information is publicly released.

Message to Students: A possible scenario for back to class

The following message from the Vice-President Academic and Research was sent to UPEI students and copied to employees via their UPEI email accounts on Thursday, April 13, 2023.

Dear Students,

The UPEI administration acknowledges how stressful this strike is on you. We are receiving many questions from you and parents. Although we do not have definitive answers to all questions because much depends on when the strike will end, we are sharing with you a tentative proposal below.

New award created to assist Indigenous students at UPEI

The UPEI Mawi’omi Indigenous Student Centre has created a new award for Indigenous students attending the University, with support from the Government of Prince Edward Island.

The Engaging with Culture Award is designed to help current Indigenous students, their families, and support people attend ceremonies and cultural gatherings by alleviating financial concerns. The funding amount awarded will vary according to need.

UPEI Community Bulletin: Minister appoints mediator so talks can resume

The following message was issued by email to UPEI employees and students on April 6, 2023. 

The University and the UPEI Faculty Association received a letter from the Hon. Bloyce Thompson, Minister of Economic Growth, Tourism and Culture, late on April 5, 2023, confirming that Michelle Flaherty will assist the two parties as they enter mediated talks. Ms. Flaherty is an experienced mediator and arbitrator who assisted the parties earlier this year.

The University is pleased to get back to the bargaining table with the UPEI Faculty Association (UPEI FA).

Earlier today, the Government of Prince Edward Island contacted both parties to see if they would be interested in entering mediation in an attempt to resolve the ongoing UPEI FA strike.

Both parties have agreed.

The RISE program is part of community legal information here on PEI. They work with people who have experienced sexual violence, intimate partner violence, and workplace sexual harassment. They provide support through legal information, referrals to community services, and up to 4 hours of advice from a trauma-informed lawyer at no cost to the client.
