Canadian author, journalist, and historian Gwynne Dyer to speak at UPEI on November 3

Canadian author, journalist, and historian Gwynne Dyer will give a public lecture titled “Planetary Maintenance Engineers: A Last-Ditch Climate Rescue Strategy,” on November 3 at 7 pm in the Duffy Science Centre Amphitheatre (Room 135) at UPEI. 

Dyer will discuss challenges facing the world because of climate change and explore the concept of “geoengineering,” or cooling the planet by artificial means. He has interviewed over 50 climate scientists “who must be our reluctant guides in this crisis.” 

Corinne Chappell wins Dwight Dorey Youth Advocacy Award

Corinne Chappell, Advisor to the Vice-President, Academic and Research, on Indigenous Affairs at UPEI, has won the prestigious 2022 Adult Dwight Dorey Youth Advocacy Award. This award, established by the Congress of Aboriginal Peoples’ National Youth Council, recognizes an Indigenous adult who demonstrates support, advocacy, and leadership towards Indigenous youth in their communities.

Public Open House at the Canadian Centre for Climate Change and Adaptation

The Canadian Centre for Climate Change and Adaptation in St. Peter's Bay will host a public Open House on Friday, October 21, from 9 am to 4 pm.

From 9:30 to 11:30 am, there will be presentations by industry, government, and NGO leaders regarding the effects of climate change on their sectors. Tours of the facility and graduate student poster presentations will take place from 1 to 4 pm.

A light lunch will be provided and public transport is available through the T3 transit network.

UPEI Department of Music presents ‘Autumn Colours’ recital

The UPEI Department of Music will present a faculty recital, "Autumn Colours," featuring Jeffrey Bazett-Jones (viola), Sean Kemp (violin), and Natalie Williams Calhoun (cello); Magdalena von Eccher (piano); and Karem Simon (clarinet) presenting this chamber music recital of trios by Mozart, Stravinsky, and Brahms. Tickets are $30 for adults and $20 for students and may be purchased at the admissions desk.

UPEI Department of Music presents ‘Autumn Colours’ recital on November 12

The UPEI Department of Music will present a faculty recital, "Autumn Colours," on Saturday, November 12, 2022, at 7:30 pm, in the Dr. Steel Recital Hall, Steel Building.

The recital was originally planned for October 1 but was postponed because of the impact of post-tropical storm Fiona.

String players Jeffrey Bazett-Jones (viola), Sean Kemp (violin), and Natalie Williams Calhoun (cello) will collaborate with Magdalena von Eccher (piano) and Karem Simon (clarinet) in presenting this chamber music recital of trios by Mozart, Stravinsky, and Brahms.

Panthers This Week: October 10-16

The week of October 10–16 is a busy one for the UPEI Panthers as they take on opponents at home and away.

Wednesday, October 12:

The UPEI Women’s Hockey Panthers (1-1-0) take to the ice in MacLauchlan Arena B against Université de Moncton Aigles Bleus (0-2-0) at 7:00 pm. The Panthers look to defeat Moncton for the second time this season.

The UPEI Women’s Rugby Panthers play the Saint Mary’s Huskies in Halifax on Wednesday, October 12, at 7:00 pm.

Dr. Trevor Jain receives inaugural Doug Dennis Award for Public Service Excellence

Dr. Trevor Jain, director of UPEI’s BSc in Paramedicine program, was presented with the inaugural Doug Dennis Award for Public Service Excellence by the Community Foundation of PEI during its annual gala dinner on September 21.

The Doug Dennis Outstanding Public Service Award recognizes a provincial civil servant or group that has demonstrated outstanding contributions to PEI’s citizens and provincial government.

Kelly Clements and Salem Farag named UPEI Panther Subway Athletes of the Week

Every week, UPEI Athletics and Recreation recognizes two student-athletes for their achievements and contributions to their respective sports. UPEI Panther Subway Athletes of the Week for October 3–9 are Kelly Clements (women’s hockey) and Salem Farag (men’s soccer).

Clements, a fourth-year forward and arts student from High Bank, PEI, scored both goals in a 2-1 win over the Université de Moncton Aigle Bleues during their season opener on October 7.
