Dr. Derek Schipper, Department of Chemistry, University of Waterloo will present a seminar on Wednesday, September 18 at 12:30 pm. Dr. Schipper’s presentation is titled “Advances in Catalytic Methods and Functional Aromatic Structures”. The seminar will be held in Room 212 in the NRC lecture theatre.

This year's Chief Justice Thane Campbell Lectureship in Law will be delivered by Lesli Bisgould, BA (York University) 1987, LLB (Osgoode - York University) 1990. Ms. Bisgould will be speaking on the changes to and development of laws relating to animals and animal welfare in Canada. It will take place on the UPEI campus in the MacKinnon Auditorium, McDougall Hall on Friday, October 4 at 1:30 pm. Ms. Bisgould has been practicing law since 1992, focusing on animal law and animal rights. She is also an adjunct professor at the University of Toronto's faculty of law where she teaches a course on animals and the law. She is also the author of Animals and the Law (2011), a Canadian law textbook published by Irwin Law.

UPEI will celebrate the International Day of Peace on Friday, September 20 at 12:30 pm at the Chaplaincy Centre. Come by for a "peace" of cake, a moment of silence, local musical talent, and more! The International Day of Peace takes place on Saturday, September 21. In 2002, the UN General Assembly officially declared September 21 as the permanent annual date for the International Day of Peace.

UPEI Athletics and Recreation is hosting the first Atlantic university field hockey tournament of the fall season this weekend, September 21–22, at the UPEI Turf Facility. Six universities—UPEI, SMU, DAL, StFX, UNB, and Acadia— will be participating. The first game will see UPEI take on StFX at 12:00 pm on September 21. Come out and support your UPEI Panthers! Mehregan or Jashn-e Mehr (Mehr Festival) is a Zoroastrian and Persian (Iranian) festival to honor the Yazata of "Mehr", which is responsible for friendship, affection and love. It is also widely referred to as Persian Festival of Autumn. There will be music, dance, and more! Light refreshments will be served. Yet beyond tea ceremonies, Zen gardens, and the bushido spirit, there exists a modern world filled with manga, anime, video games and innumerable aspects of Japanese pop culture that cater to the taste of today’s youth. Join Mr. Tatsuo Arai, Consul General of Japan at Montreal, for a special public talk on “Japanese Pop Culture." It is this unbelievably popular trend that Consul General Arai aims to explore during his lecture; everything from the birth of Japanese manga and the masterpieces of Studio Ghibli to the colourful combinations of cute boxed lunches, the latest fashion trends, and beyond. By examining the various characteristics and peculiarities that have breathed life into this globalized cultural phenomenon, long-time fans and newcomers alike will be fascinated by Japanese pop culture’s undeniable charm. This event is open to the public and all are welcome to attend.

In the first Trudeau Lecture to come to the University of Prince Edward Island, beloved Métis author and playwright Maria Campbell, 2012 visiting Trudeau Fellow, talks about the connection between her volunteering, her academic career, and her work in literature, theatre, and video to end violence against women in her lecture entitled: "Picking Up The Pieces - Seeking Out The Roots Of Violence Against Indigenous Women." Growing up in a Road Allowance Métis community in northern Saskatchewan, Dr. Campbell witnessed the power that women in her community exercised, as well as the violence they experienced. A lifelong student of Indigenous oral history, she will speak to what she has learned of traditional ways that fostered respect and authority for Aboriginal women, and on how colonization disrupted those ways and introduced gendered violence. Dr. Campbell will also describe how she is using her Trudeau Foundation fellowship to explore archival and secondary source material to support what she knows about the roots of violence against Aboriginal women. Her lecture will cover how she came to look for these “pieces of ourselves left behind” in documentary sources, and how observations about Aboriginal women from a Euro/Western lens can be re-visited to assist Aboriginal women’s activism today. Admission is free and all are welcome to attend. Light refreshments will be served.

UPEI will host the sixth annual Connecting Aboriginal Cultures Pow Wow on Monday, October 7 from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm in McMillan Hall, W.A. Murphy Student Centre. All are welcome to attend and celebrate the vibrant culture and history of the Mi’kmaq people of Prince Edward Island.
