The Multidisciplinary Faculty Discussion Group on Environmental Issues is launching a series of brown bag lunch events which aim to showcase UPEI faculty's environment-related research. 

Kicking off the series is Dr. Michael Arfken, Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology, speaking about Critical Psychology, Work, and the Environment on Friday, February 28, 12:30-1:15 p.m. in MCDH 215. Students, faculty, and staff are all welcome to attend.

UPEI FSDE has been a participant in Go CODE Girl Day, which is an initiative that takes place at 20+ universities with Engineering programs across Canada to encourage young women to pursue Engineering!

In a flipped classroom learners engage with lectures or other materials outside of class to prepare for an active learning experience in the classroom. Flipping some classes can add some variety and a change of pace and create more interest for both the learners and the instructor. This workshop will introduce you to flipped instruction tools and techniques that can aid in creating a more active and engaging learning environment. Facilitated by the E-Learning Office, this workshop will be offered on Thursday, March 5th from 2:00 to 3:00 pm in the Robertson Library, Room 265. REGISTER

Walk With a Doc is happening again this Saturday (and every Saturday) at 9 am at the indoor track at the Chi-Wan Young Sports Centre.  The walk is free to everyone (including the general public) - all that you need to bring are indoor walking shoes.

You are cordially invited to attend Janet Payne’s teaching presentation on February 25th at noon in AVC 287N.  Janet will be presenting “Creating a Welcoming Classroom” based in part on Teaching at Its Best: A Research-Based Resource for College Instructors by Linda Nilson.

This presentation will focus on ways of creating a warm, welcoming  environment that fosters student participation, motivation to learn, satisfaction with the course, and achievement of course objectives.  Much of the practical information suggested by Nilson revolves around planning a welcoming classroom, creating positive first day of class, developing rapport with and between students, learning students' names, and creating an inclusive and equitable classroom.

The Fiona Papps Psychology Colloquium Series will feature Dr. Tina Pranger speaking about the role of Psychology in mental health on PEI from the 1940's to today. In her new book, Beyond the Asylum: The Evolution of Mental Health Care in Prince Edward Island, 1846-2017, Dr. Pranger richly details this often bumpy evolution of care. Tina Pranger, PhD (Social Science and Health), has over 35 years of experience in the mental health field, most recently as a mental health officer with Veterans Affairs Canada. Admission is free and all are welcome to attend.

family? Free Triple P-Positive Parenting Seminars will be held February 18th, 25th and March
3rd at Murphy’s Community Centre (room 207) from 7:00-8:30pm. Triple P is an international
project promoted and supported by the Government of Prince Edward Island. There are three
sessions in the seminar series, and each session addresses a different theme. Fathers,
mothers, grandparents, foster parents and guardians are welcome!

Mitacs Training and Synapse are co-hosting a free "Practice Your Presentation Skills I" workshop for UPEI graduates and postdoctoral fellows in Room 142 of Andrew Hall on Tuesday, February 25, 2020 from 9:00 am - 5:00 pm 

There are still a limited number of spots open for registration in the course. 

Course registration is on first-come, first-served basis and can be made on EDGE. A light breakfast and lunch will be provided to all participants.

Practice Your Presentation Skills I – Charlottetown, PE (February 25, 2020)

In this one-day course, theory is introduced in short bursts and participants spend the majority of time practicing their presentation skills while receiving onsite feedback. The focus on extensive practice and feedback is what makes the program meaningful, and is what makes the learning stick.

Learning Outcomes:

Through completing this course, participants will: 

  • Broaden their understanding of presentation logistics
  • Gain a greater ability to persuade and motivate others
  • Understand how to plan and structure presentations
  • Understand how (and how not to) use visual aids
  • Learn to engage others through genuine and authentic presentation
  • Learn tools to overcome and manage fears of public speaking
  • Gain onsite practice and receive expert and peer feedback
  • Be perceived as an expert in their topic area
