Our learners face many demands for their attention, so getting them to actively engage in their learning can be a challenge. How do you choose the best pedagogies? Today, lectures and active learning have been cast as competing opposites. In fact, they can be quite effective when used together. Interactive lectures combine engaging lecture segments with selected active learning methods. 

This intensive two-part workshop series, offered by the E-Learning Office, aims to give instructors the opportunity to experience first-hand the components necessary for creating interactive lectures.

Part one, titled Better PowerPoints for Better Lectures, focuses on slide design and the creation of study handouts. Part two, titled Action-Oriented Learning Design, focuses on interactions that can be created in PowerPoint and on active learning techniques that will connect and solidify lecture materials.

Part one will be offered on Monday, August 9th and repeated again on Thursday August 26th from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm in Room 210 of the Robertson Library. Part two will be offered on Tuesday, November 12th from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm in Room 265 of the Robertson Library. Interested individuals can register for either part on its own or for both parts. Notice from Faculties Management – Power Shutdown

There will be a power shutdown for Faculty of Sustainable Design Engineering Building, Chi-Wan Young Sports Centre, W.A. Murphy Student Centre, Health Sciences Building and SDU Main Building. The shutdown is scheduled to take place on Wednesday, July 31, 2019 beginning at 10:00pm and is expected to take approximately 2 hours to complete. Emergency power will not be affected.

This shutdown is necessary to de-energize a high voltage line that in running through a construction site, on the west side of the Central Utility Building, where PEI Energy Systems are replacing the current underground oil tanks.

Drop by to see the features of the Sun safely and learn about our nearest star. Viewings will be held every second Wednesday, 12:30-1:30pm, with the next viewing being July 31. We've had to cancel our last couple of viewings due to cloudy weather, but we're hopeful that the weather may cooperate this week! The Synapse Innovators of the Year awards were created to honour individuals associated with UPEI (student, staff, faculty, or alumni) who have made a distinct contribution to their community through research, design, and/or service that has addressed a challenge and demonstrated a tangible impact on quality of life, economic development, and/or the welfare of society.

Individuals may also receive this award if the individual has made a significant contribution to innovation as determined by the selection committee.

World Hepatitis Day will be recognized on July 29 at UPEI. The World Hepatitis Alliance estimates there are nearly 330 million people living with Viral Hepatitis; nearly 290 million people are unaware they have it! Unless there is a massive scale-up in screening, diagnosis, and linkage to care, viral hepatitis will continue to spread leading to an estimated 76 million new infections and 18.1 million preventable deaths from viral hepatitis by 2030.

The Pride Parade is on Saturday, July 27, 2019, in Charlottetown. Pride parade participants must meet on Terry Fox Drive (behind the Shaw Building, by Victoria Park) between 11:30-12:00 (noon) on Saturday, July 27. We will meet at the UPEI van. Wear lots of colour, and show your Pride. Student Affairs will be providing UPEI Pride T-Shirts to those walking in the parade! T-Shirts will be available for pick up in Student Affairs, Dalton Hall, 5th floor, after Monday, July 15 (one per person, first come first served). And if anyone would like to join in the festivities but is unable to walk the parade route, not a problem! Dr. Ronald J. Baker, President Emeritus, took up his duties as the University of Prince Edward Island's first president in the summer of 1969. Upon retiring as president in 1978, Dr. Baker continued duties as a professor at UPEI until 1991. Dr. Baker will host a meet-and-greet reception to mark the occasion of UPEI's fiftieth anniversary and looks forward to welcoming former colleagues and students!

Join members of the community as two legacy projects are announced in honour of former premier, Dr. Alex Campbell, whose bold vision for post-secondary education on Prince Edward Island was central in the formation of UPEI fifty years ago.
