The Faculty of Science Graduate Studies Committee invites the campus community to a presentation by Sarah Hewko (Applied Human Sciences) entitled: "The early retiree divests the workplace: Quantitative analysis of retirement decision-making among health professionals". 

This event is Friday at 12:30 pm in room 204 of the Duffy Science Centre. Everyone is welcome.

Brittany Jakubiec titled "Out of the Box: Queerying Identity Development for Sexual and Gender Minority Youth in Prince Edward Island".

All are welcome to attend Brittany's public presentation, taking place on Tuesday February 26, 2019 from 2:30 - 3:00 pm in the Irving Chemistry Centre room 104.

All are invited to attend a special Faculty of Sustainable Design Engineering Graduate Research Seminar, on Friday, February 22, at 12 noon, in SDE 202. Dr. Atul Pathak from Biovectra will be speaking on "An Emerging Paradigm in the Global Pharmaceutical Industry".

The monthly meeting of the UPEI & Friends Neuroscience Journal Club will be held Friday, February 22nd from 3-4 pm in the "Fishbowl" of the Duffy Research Centre (NRC). This will be a "meet and greet" discussion with our special invited speaker, Dr. Jay Penney from MIT, who will present a seminar in AVC Lecture B at 2 pm that day. All faculty, staff and students with an interest in neuroscience research are welcome.

Mental Health Primer for UPEI staff and faculty. Learn some basics around recognizing general mental health issues as well as tools for how to help and respond to someone in need. Please note that this course does not replace the Mental Health First Aid Training currently provided on campus. Les Wagner, Regional Director, Prince County Canadian Mental Health Association, PEI Division will be leading the Mental Health Primer Course. The 2 hour course is being held on Tuesday, February 26 from 9:30 am - 11:30 am and Thursday, February 28 from 1:30 pm - 3:30 pm.

If you have difficulty carving out uninterrupted time for writing, if you struggle with motivating yourself to write, or if you would simply like the supportive collaboration of a writing retreat, consider Time to Write, UPEI's faculty writers retreat.
 
When: Wednesday, May 15 to Sunday, May 19
 
Where: Stanley Bridge Resort
 
Cost to participants: $200, which includes four nights accommodation, meals, and snacks
 
Your project must be at a stage where sustained writing time makes sense. Your research and/or data collection and analysis must be completed to the point that you are ready to write. You must also be prepared to commit to the full program: a total of 3½ days focused on writing. The retreat is open to tenured and tenure stream University of Prince Edward Island faculty in any Department/Faculty/School.
 
Email Research Communications Officer Dave Atkinson, datkinson@upei.ca, with a brief summary of the project you plan to work and your writing goals for the retreat. There is room for six participants at Time to Write.

In recognition of the outstanding performance and dedication of our faculty and staff, a number of annual awards have been created to acknowledge their efforts and achievements. 

Up to 10 Presidential Awards of Merit for UPEI Faculty, Librarians, Clinical Veterinary Professionals and Clinical Nursing Instructors and four categories of Presidential Awards of Merit for UPEI Staff will be awarded in 2019. These awards will be presented during a Celebration of Colleagues to be held on Tuesday, April 30, 2019 from 10:30am-12:00pm in McMillan Hall, W.A. Murphy Student Centre. 

Susan Connolly, Associate Vice-President, Human Resources & Legal, will lead the process and chair the committee to select award recipients.

Providing content for your course can be the easy part in the process. Figuring out how to explain to students what impact that content will have on them and for them can be far more challenging. There are numerous ways to describe learning and just as many opinions as to which is best. Are learning targets even necessary? Come and hear what the E-Learning Office has to say about targets for learning. You can attend this workshop on either Monday, February 25th or Tuesday, March 26th from 10:30 to 11:30 am in Room 265 of the Robertson Library. REGISTER

There will be a workshop for instructors on how to facilitate participation from students in class. The workshop will focus on topics like planning for discussions, developing a questioning strategy, choreographing group dynamics, getting more/less talk from students and dealing with generational differences and with international students. The workshop takes place on Tuesday, March 5th from 10:30 am to 11:30 am in Room 265 of the Robertson Library. REGISTER

All fathers and mothers, grandfathers, and grandmothers, and anyone who cares for children is invited to a series of Triple P Positive Parenting Seminars. There are three sessions, and the first (rescheduled from February 13th due to weather) is on Wednesday, February 20th at 7:00 in the evening, at the Murphy Community Centre on Richmond Street in Charlottetown. The first week’s topic is “The Power of Positive Parenting”. Dr. Philip Smith, Psychology, is the presenter. Sessions are free, and childcare is available.
