The UPEI men’s hockey team will take on the Université de Moncton Aigles Bleus in an exhibition game on Saturday, December 29, at 7:30 pm at the Credit Union Arena in Tignish. Tickets can be purchased at the arena in advance or on game night for $10 adults, $5 students/seniors.

Teaching Dossier Workshop Registration Deadline

January 21, 1-3pm: Introduction to the Teaching Dossier January 28, 1-3pm: Writing a Statement of Teaching Philosophy February 4, 1-3pm: Preparing a Research Dossier The Faculty Development Office offers dossier workshops for faculty interested in compiling a file for tenure or promotion -- or simply for developmental purposes. The first, delivered by Shannon Murray and Sue Dawson, introduces the principles of the teaching dossier, outlines the requirements for tenure and promotion in the Faculty Handbook, and suggests a variety of ways to present your teaching for others. The second workshop looks at the statement of Teaching Philosophy, a standard but challenging item in a teaching dossier. Participants will begin the process of drafting that statement. And on February 4, Katherine Schultz will suggest ways to make the research portion of your tenure and promotion file accessible to a broad readership. Epi on the Island Module 1 "Spatial Data Management and Geoprocessing Using Open Source Tools"

Instructors: Dirk Pfeiffer, Dr Med Vet MACVSc PhD DipECVPH Professor of Veterinary Epidemiology The Royal Veterinary College University of London and Javier Sanchez, DVM PhD CFIA Research Chair- Risk Analysis Canadian Regulatory Veterinary Epidemiology Network CRVE Net Atlantic Veterinary College Course Content: The goal of this course is provide a practical guide for handling spatial data using open-source software. At the end of the course the participants should have developed a set of skills to manipulate spatial information. Although limited, the participants will be provided with basic concepts of geographical information systems and spatial epidemiology such as spatial data representation, different types of spatial information, and a short introduction to spatial data analysis. The course will focus on the practical aspects of data management, data processing and data visualization of the main types of spatial data: point patterns, aggregated and continuous spatial data using open source software. The main software used will be Quantum GIS, including some of its main add-in applications. Where appropriate, other open-source tools will be briefly introduced. Participants are encouraged to bring their own data so that they have an opportunity to practice some of the concepts covered in the course with their own data.

Epi on the Island Module 2 "Introduction to MultiLevel Modelling"

Instructors: Ian Dohoo, DVM PhD FCAHS Professor-Epidemiology Director, Centre for Veterinary Epidemiological Research Department of Health Management Atlantic Veterinary College and Henrik Stryhn, PhD MSc Associate Professor in Biostatistics Department of Health Management Atlantic Veterinary College Course Content: This course is designed to provide participants with the knowledge and skills required to successfully fit multilevel models to both continuous data (linear models) and discrete data (emphasis on logistic and Poisson models). The presentation of theoretical background material is limited to that which is required for a reasonable understanding of the methods employed. Specific topics covered in the course include: introduction to multilevel/hierarchical data, mixed models for continuous data, mixed models for discrete data, model evaluation (diagnostics), analysis of repeated measures and alternative approaches to dealing with clustered data (including Bayesian methods). The main software used for the instruction is MLwiN, but code for fitting models in additional software packages (including Stata) will also be provided. Participants are encouraged to bring their own data to the course and will be provided with time and assistance to analyze those data.
