Journalist, broadcaster, and historian Gwynne Dyer returns to UPEI for a lecture on the return of nationalism as a movement around the world. Dyer will present “The Populist Revolt: its causes and cures” at 7:30 pm, Thursday, September 13 in the Dr. Steel Recital Hall at UPEI. The lecture is free and is presented by the SDU Institute for Christianity and Culture.

Dr. Michael Moore, Director, Marine Mammal Center at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, Cape Cod, will give a public lecture called “Food for Thought: How we all kill whales” on Friday, September 14, at 7:00 pm, in the Alex H. MacKinnon Auditorium, Don and Marion McDougall Hall, UPEI. 

Human activity in the marine environment is increasingly having an impact on cetaceans—whales, dolphins, and porpoises—sometimes resulting in the unintentional entanglement and death of animals. Dr. Moore will discuss these pressing issues, which concern Canada and other nations that have substantial fishing and shipping industries in marine environments. There is no charge to attend Dr. Moore’s lecture. All are welcome to attend.

Dr. Moore's presentation is part of AVC's 2018 Animal Welfare in Practice conference, which is focusing on the timely topic of whale stranding. Dr. Roger Linington, Simon Fraser University, Canada Research Chair in High-Throughput Screening and Chemical Biology and Director, Centre for High-Throughput Chemical Biology, will be giving a seminar talk on "Integrated Omics Methods for Bioactive Natural Product Discovery, on Sept. 12th at 12:30 pm in DRC 212. All are welcome.

Karma Yoga will not take place in the chaplaincy centre today, Tuesday, September 11. We will though have it outside in the quad, weather permitting. Please contact Angela Marchbank at amarchbank@upei.ca after 11 am to find out the status. 

The Karma Yoga class is held every Tuesday from 12:10–12:55 pm at UPEI Chaplaincy Centre or outside in the Quad. Fee: Fee for each class is a donation to the UPEI food bank - $5 or food donation.

This program provides a full body strength and flexibility workout which tones the body. Long stretches will melt away stress and create a feeling of deep relaxation. Please bring your own mat and/or towel and water.

Dr. Bill Whelan (Professor and Chair, Department of Physics) will host an informal session on tips for applying for NSERC Research Tools and Instruments (RTI) funding. In addition to being a Co-Investigator on a successful RTI grant application, Dr. Whelan has served as a member of the NSERC Grant Selection Committee GSC-29 (General Physics) and numerous other grant review panels for NSERC, CIHR, and the Canadian Cancer Society Research Institute. All are welcome, but please note that RTI applicants and co-applicants must each currently hold or be applying for an eligible NSERC research grant at the time of application, such as a Discovery Grant or Collaborative Research and Development Grant.

Senior undergraduate students in Science are encouraged to attend and participate as well. This event begins 12:35 pm Friday, September 7 in room 278N of the AVC.

The Faculty of Science Graduate Studies Committee invites new and prospective graduate students and faculty to an orientation session offered by Pedro Quijon, the current Graduate Coordinator. Senior undergraduate students in Science are encouraged to attend and participate as well. This event begins 12:35 pm Friday, September 7 in room 204 of the Duffy Science Centre. 

For classical music aficionados, the UPEI Department of Music's Clarinet Spectrum Series will present one of the seminal avant garde works of the 20th century -- Olivier Messiaen’s Quartet for the End of Time -- on Saturday, September 8, 2018 at 8:00 PM at the Dr. Steel Recital Hall. UPEI Clarinet Professor Karem J. Simon will collaborate with Jennifer King, piano, Karen Graves, violin, and Natalie Williams Calhoun, cello, in the presentation of this monumental masterpiece. The evening will proceed with a brief introduction followed by the performance of this fifty-minute piece in its entirety. Admission, at $20 Adults and $10 Students, may be acquired at the door.

PEI Energy Systems has notified Facilities Management of necessary maintenance work that is required on the district heating lines. 

This work will require a shutdown of the heating system and domestic hot water for the Chi-Wan Young Sports Centre, the Faculty of Sustainable Design Engineering Building and the Bell Aliant Centre. Cold water will not be impacted. 

The shutdown is scheduled for Sunday, September 9, 2018 beginning at 7:00 am and is expected to take approximately 24 hours to complete.
